I'm aware that increasing the number of categories is not everyone's favourite idea. However I relate to the photograph of the QUEEN ELIZABETH as I visited that location on one of my earliest shipping trips to view her and visit the Ocean Terminal (1964).  To avoid such historical photos being deleted, perhaps the existing category could be renamed 'Harbour Views' with subcategories as 'Harbour Overviews' and 'Historical Harbour Scenes' or 'Historical Berth Scenes'.

I'm not sure of the logistics that would be required, but initially all the existing uploads could be transferred to the new Overview sub-category and the Berth category populated going forward.

Many thanks- best regards

Tom

I'm able to find yachts aka houseboats on Equasis this morning, so as Allan commented, this may have only been an upgrade or temporary situation.

Shipping News and information / Re: Ex: Bird class patrol vessels

Hi Robert,
I used to visit Southampton regularly in the 1990s.  Checking through my records the only patrol boats I recorded in the Itchen were 'P513' and 'P514', (Jan 1996) which I have no further details.  Not sure if this helps.  These numbers seem well outside the range of those used by the RN at that time.  They could have been the two that I saw in Antwerp a few years ago.

Travelled 40+ miles to Calshot in Hampshire (UK) to photograph a Shell VLCC leaving Fawley and just got there in time, only to find I had forgotten my camera!!

Klaipeda was showing as her port of registration when at anchor off Brixham.  I believe her IMO is/was 6913510, her old call sign (LR 2014-2015) was LYTH although Equasis currently shows her flag and call sign as being unknown.  Overnight, she should pass south of Poole where she had been built in 1970.

Hi,

The Marine & Towage Services Group's tug MTS VICTORY has just sailed from Tor Bay with the old sand dredger SAND SWAN in tow for Leith to be broken up (AIS ETA showing as 02 March 2020 at midday).  They have been anchored off Brixham for a couple of weeks after arriving there from Liverpool.

Help and Advice / Re: Lloyds List

If it is shipping in the London/Thames area that you need to research then Lloyd's List used to publish various columns/articles on various days.  In the 1950s that included Saturdays.  On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays ships expected in the major UK ports were published.  On Tuesdays a round-up of the recent ship sales, including those sold for scrap (I remember Liberty ships going for scrap for

Regrettably I know of no on-line source of Lloyd's Lists.  Original copies from the 1950s onwards are kept at the Borough Library in the City area of London which is a short walk from the Bank underground station in the City (Waterloo and City Line - train times were geared mainly to working office hours when I last visited).  The Lloyd's List are bound in volumes containing a year's copies.  Also available by prior arrangement are the old Lloyd's Voyage Cards for British ships (mostly 1950s-1960s era), and back copies of Lloyd's Shipping Index and Lloyd's Voyage Record.  A great place to visit for research, but best to look at their website before planning a visit,

This of course is only of use if you can reach London easily.

Trip reports / Amsterdam-Hook of Holland
« on: February 11, 2019, 10:37:08 PM »
Hi,

I'm thinking of planning a trip to Hook of Holland in March and will be flying into Amsterdam.  Last September I was there and there was no rail connection from the Hook as the new metro was being built.

Could anyone advise me if this has now been completed and confirm that rail or metro connections with the Hook are now available, normal circumstances permitting, please?

Many thanks for your help,

Best regards

Hi,

I do not use a Nikon camera, but it may be down to some setting that adjusts the picture ratio.  I would think that on a full screen setting on the website, a 6x4 image would stretch further across the screen than a 7x5 (figures are inches - 2.54 centimetres/inch).  The problem with changing such a setting may also adjust your megapixel figure, but that may not be an issue if you are not producing large hard-copy.

I'm no expert but the above may help, no doubt someone with a Nikon can help you further.

Hi,

I know this has been discussed fairly exhaustively in the past, but I would prefer to use the LR/IMO option as this is in wide spread use for current shipping.  I have an interest in researching my Father's photographs, many taken in the 50s and 60s, and some even older so am well aware of the historic limitations of IMOs.  I feel that making the Mirimar Number the standard only signifies a preference to 'look backwards' and may not attract the younger element.  This is my personal view and not intended to complicate the discussion.

Thanks you - best regards
