Title: Suez-Canal blocked
Post by: portagent on February 08, 2006, 03:14:01 PM
Dear All,

German newspaper reports that Suez-Canal is blocked since
this morning (08.Feb) caused by grounding of a big cargoship named OKAL KING DOR close to Ismailia. Four tugs
are on the way to assist.
Can't trace vessel in LRF, as obviously incorrect name.
Who knows more ?

It never ceases to amaze me how the media constantly get ships names wrong, especially here in Britain where despite a long maritime tradition, the media have absolutely no knowledge at all about ships and hence small coasters that run aground are always called 120,000 ton super-tankers and such like, with a false name ofcourse.

Re Jordan's remarks about the media getting ship's names wrong  -

It can get worse,  I was up the Gulf during the Iran/Iraq war when merchant ships were being attacked by both sides & read in a Bahrein newspaper of an attack on a 200,000 tons Danish superMARKET.

When you hear reports in the media about a subject that you know about they are often inaccurate & full of errors  -  does'nt it make you wonder how accurate are the reports about subjects that you DON'T know about  ?

Cheers

i was thinking the same thing. i notice names that are spelled wrong constantly. it does make you think about how flawed other items in the news are, to an extent atleast. though lets try to avoid politics in here, im sure we all have our own opinions on that matter

I think Jesper you are talking abt the supertanker KARAMA MAERSK that was attacked and harrased by some naval boats. Am I correct? Unless KATE MAERSK was also damaged then I would be wrong.

thanks
Milind
