Shipping News and information / Pictures Berge Everest deleted.
« on: November 13, 2014, 08:24:38 AM »
Finally managed to get access to the Berge Everest, courtesy owner, agents, officers and crew. They kindly allowed the taking of a large number of unique pictures on board. Half of them apparently do not live up to Shipspotting's quality standards although members showed a vivid interest. Never mind the trouble taken to obtain on board pictures in the first place, the admins decided within one hour they were no good. So regret to advise you I've also deleted the other half. This is particularly galling since the upload marked my 5000th. picture on the site. Having been a member of this site almost since the beginning, having experienced all the ups and downs, having contributed in the past to keep it alive, I've had enough.

Rgds,
Robert.

On completion of the seatrials she'll proceed to the Keppel Verolme yard at Rozenburg instead of Bremerhaven as usual. ETA Nov. 27th. 11:00. This may be an excellent opportunity to take pictures at close range between Hook of Holland and Rozenburg/Maassluis.

Shipping News and information / The end of Hotel "de Beer".
« on: March 20, 2013, 10:53:54 PM »
Hotel de Beer, situated in the Europoort area and well-known to shipspotters, will disappear. The Rotterdam Port Authority (RPA) has bought the hotel from it's present owner. The staff and personnel has been informed that the hotel will be closed in the foreseeable future. The workforce will be dismissed.
The RPA will use the grounds to start "harbour related activities". Safety and environmental regulations have become stricter so that the presence of a hotel can no longer be tolerated. Also, in RPA's opinion, there are sufficient hotels in the area. There are relatively new tourist hotels a.o. in the centre of Rozenburg as well as den Briel.

Shipping News and information / Shipspotting Rozenburg Landtong
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:52:02 PM »
According to a story in the local press, the Rotterdam Port Authority has plans to construct a "maritime industrial zone" on the Rozenburg Landtong. This peninsule separates the Europoort Calandcanal from the New Waterway towards Hook of Holland. This plan jeopardizes the unobstructed view of both waterways and therefore will hamper shipspotting. Detailed plans will follow  in April. Reverting.

The text below was taken from Piet Sinke's Shipping News Clippings. Needless to add any comment.

This is the last season greetings send from this vessel. Soon the SINGAPORE will be history and wholesaled, together with LONDON and ROTERDAM. Presently the SINGAPORE is performing her last towage under Dutch flag. An empty barge from Malaysia across the Pacific to Morgan City (USA).
I was already retired, but due to personnel circumstances I was requested by Svitzer Ocean Towage to make this last voyage. I joined SINGAPORE in Honolulu end of November, during a bunker stop. It is a trip down memory lane. In 1984 I was Chief Officer on the SMIT SINGAPORE on her maiden voyage. After that I made many voyages as Captain on the SMITWIJS SINGAPORE. This is my last voyage as Captain and it gives me great pleasure that I can do this on this tug, with a few old time good colleagues. On the other hand it is a sad feeling now the end is near for this branch of Dutch ocean towage, dating back to the nineteenth century. It didn

Shipping News and information / Berge Stahl
« on: October 13, 2012, 09:56:07 PM »
Berge Stahl's propellor will be improved in Roterdam next week. The operation will be performed at berth 84 in the Calandcanal (port nr. 5335). On Monday October 15th. she will shift from the EECV terminal (port nr. 6310) to the opposite site of the Landtong near Rozenburg. The vessel, having a LOA of 343 mtrs., will be trimmed down by the head to a depth of 10,50 mtrs. causing the stern to rise to a draught of 3,50 mtrs. meaning the propellor will be sticking out of the water. The installation will take place during daytime and last for a week. The operation may give you a unique opportunity to take pictures of the Berge Stahl at close range.

Brgds,
Robert.

Norfolk Line's relatively new RO/RO "Maas Viking"was withdrawn from her regular schedule on September 1st. and spent some time at her Vlaardingen berth to be renamed "Kent".
On October 1st. she shifted to a unused Cobelfret berth near Rozenburg and has been there ever since. Although no notable activities are taking place, she does not seem to be laid up either.
Can anybody shed some light on this? Attached the link to pictures taken by my fellow Rozenburg shipspotter Jan Oosterboer. Mark the new name; it seems as if it was applied temporarily....

Shipping News and information / End of an era of former "Dutch Glory"?
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:06:07 AM »
According to a message which was passed by Piet Sinke from Singapore these former Dutch Smit tugs have been put up for sale. That may mean an end to an era of "Dutch glory". Owners spent very recently plenty of money on the Rotterdam and London for large upgrades , talking about millions, and now this.

-Tug "London" Built 1975 in Holland, 74,83 m Loa, 13.500 BHP, 167 T Bollard Pull;
-Tug "Rotterdam" Built 1975 in Holland, 74.83 m Loa, 13.500 BHP, 167 T Bollard Pull;
-A.H.T. "Singapore" Built 1984 in Holland, 75.32 m Loa, 13.500 BHP, 189 T Bollard Pull.

All 3 tugs are well known in the towing market with a good reputation and performance. "London" and "Rotterdam" are sister-ships which have benefits from both operational but also marketing point of views. The "Singapore" is also an Anchor Handling Tug (AHT), which gives her more flexibilities for certain jobs. Next Special Survey on "London" and "Rotterdam" is due in 2015 and for Singapore it is due in 2014.

Sellers price ideas are:
"London"  US$ 2.7 mill
"Rotterdam" US$ 3.5 mill
"Singapore" US$ 6 mill

Shipping News and information / Southern Atlas' smokescreen ?
« on: August 31, 2012, 09:41:05 PM »
This tanker has called at Rotterdam for the first time after having been employed in the Far East since she was newly built. On Aug. 29th she was outbound, and passing the New Waterway towards Hook of Holland. Please have a look at:

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1633998

The smoke emission started just after she had passed the highrise buildings off Maassluis. It stopped about 10 mins. later, halfway to Hook of Holland. I don't know what caused it.
At first it seemed more a technical problem than a deliberate occurence. But since it stopped abruptly, it may have been a controlled emission.
It certainly did not look like an "ordinary sooting". No master would dare to do that voluntarily in the Rotterdam port area without risking a heavy fine ! FYI she did not lose speed. The signals did not indicate a pilot on board. Who can shed some light on this ?

Stena has announced it will withdraw Stena Carrier and Stena Freighter from the service between Rotterdam and Killingholme due to economic reasons. As replacement Stena has chartered Cobelfret's smaller ferries Capucine and Severine for 5 years. These new vessels were surplus to Cobelfret's requirements. The switch will be effected next month. The future of Stena Carrier and Stena Freighter is unsure.

Rgds,
Rob.

The  1976 built "Ocean Countess" can be found at the Rotterdam Calandcanal for the next 60 days where she will serve as a floating hotel at the Heerema location. The craneplatform "Balder"is now towering over her and shortly the craneplatfom "Thialf" will join. This promises interesting pictures! Unfortunately the approach is hampered by the Heerema barges alongside.
