Title: Let's share collections of lighthouses
Post by: Dmitry Rostopshin on October 24, 2011, 07:28:13 PM
Hello friends!
I would like to introduce you my new internet site www.lightphotos.net (http://www.lightphotos.net). It's intended to make collection of photos of lighthouses around the world. Last years i've visited many of them due to my job, so i put it to the Internet. But looking in general i understood that many lighthouses became relict in epoch of electronic navigation. Many of them are currently being removed from operation and simply abandoned. So i think it's a good idea to take and store photos while they still exist.
The idea of the site is simular to our favorite shipspotting.com - everybody can register and upload photos free and unlimited.
So please if you are interesting in this project and want to participate in it - please have a look here (http://www.lightphotos.net). I will be appreciate for any feedback. If you don't want to participate, but have some photos of the lighthouses and can give me permission to upload it instead of you - simply send it to me via e-mail. Many thanks in advance.
PS I've got the permission to publish this topik (thanks, Derek) so please don't consider it as spam  :)

This is a map with all lighthouses in the Faroe Island.

It is an official homepage with data and picture.
I wish you good luck with your site. :)

Hallo Dmitry,

Lighthouses, I love them (ships also).
My collection shipphoto's i'm placing here for the last 2 months.
But my lighthouse collection, these picture's are filling already for some years gaps in the ONLINE LIST OF LIGHTS,http://www.trabas.de/index.html (http://www.trabas.de/index.html). Alex Trabas is doing here a wonderfull job, maybe you can join him? Together we are strong. A part of my lighthouses are also in a picasa-album, i will complet it this winter.

Greetings -- Hans de Graaf.

Everybody many thanks for feedback and links!

Hans, i always glad to share some data, exchange photos, links etc. I think i will contact with Alex with some suggestion of data or link exchange. He's done a giant job in his site. But i think you can use your photos in several resources, not only in one site, so i will be happy if you'll find time to upload it to lightphotos as well, if you want of course  ;)
The only thing i want to say regarding such sites as Alex has. I reviewed many lighthouse galleries i found that all of them are based on the home page of one person who fill it and update it regularly. And if this person busy/not interesting anymore - site start to degrade very soon. There are many sites with photos, which are simply abandoned and will never updated anymore. That's the thing i'm trying to avoid. As you may be see, last years internet significally changed. Before it was based on "individuals" who created and supported own sites. Now we're living in Web2.0 times - everything now based on the communities, social networking, so users doesn't like simply read or watch, but prefer to participate in site life. That's what i tried to make - you can upload photo, add comments, speak with another users, rate another photos etc. And this is best way to keep site up-to-date - even if i'll stop to upload anything - site will be filled by another amateurs and this is great. I don't want to say something bad about another collections they are great and interesting, but things are changing and concepts which were good 10 years ago, now looks not optimal.
Ups, my message turned out too loooong, sorry about this  :)

Nice interesting site, I do have an image of Haulbowline lighthouse at the entrance to Carlingford Lough but as it was taken from a distance from a moving boat the quality might not suit, it can be viewed from http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy323/theoc81/Artemis30052010169.jpg?t=1325375055 (http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy323/theoc81/Artemis30052010169.jpg?t=1325375055)

Years ago when I was scanning my collection of colour slides I found that apart from the ones of ships that most interested me, I also had unknowingly collected a small number of photos of lighthouses.I looked around on the web to see if there was any particular interest in them and found that there was. Russ Rowlett at the University of North Carolina had and still has a great site covering  lighthouses from around the world. He was happy to have copies of my pictures because having been taken almost 50 years ago, they were of historical interest. I found more interest in Europe too.

Russ's site is well worth a very long look if lighthouses take your fancy.

I'll sort out some pictures for you.

Best Regards

David

Hi David!

Yes, i know Russ site very well, this is great project, we often exchange the information and photos especially rare. But Russ site doesn't contain of really many photos, mostly links to another resourses and it's a big problem to keep such links collection up-to-date, since many sites opening and closing all the time. Anyway if you can send me some pictures - this would be great, you can use e-mail in my profile or else anykei at gmail.com.

Regards,
Dmitry

Hello Dmitry, that's fine with such a web page specifically for lighthouses, I've created a login and will upload some photos at a time.

Best Regards

Hi Jim!
Hans is one of the most active contributors of the site.

Sad to confirm that A. J. de Graaf (also known by his shorter name Hans) passed away this August 2016

People who well knew him are saying:
He was a good and generous person and a humanitarian.

Hans de Graaf was also an active member of this esteemed website Shipspotting.com where he posted his 1626 photographs.

R.I.P

This information is submitted with much sorrow, Hans was almost my "neighbour",
Jadran
