Hi Cawky

Good to see her on time departure - now all we need is the weather to go with her arrival in the Port of Tyne - weather forecast is suggesting that it may rain  :-(

Hi Steve ,

Do you think many people will turn out?

The South Shields Gazzette predicted 20 000  people.

When the QE 2 first visited Liverpool ,they reckon it was nearly a million people turned out!!

I think there will be more than 20 000 , how mant people do you yhink Steve ?

and any one else please have a guess.

Hi Cawky

The crowd will be governed by what the weather turns out to be like, after all there is no cover at all alongside the river.

Looking on the bright side, no rain, I would anticipate something in the region of 100,000 onlookers. If it is raining then I would expect perhaps 20,000.

Of course it always makes me wonder how the "powers to be" actually come up with the numbers attending these events, especially when the spectators will be so spread out?

Hi Steve ,

I would think 100,000 could be  a good guess.
It is amazing how they work out the amount of people, have you ever been to the Sunderland Air Show ? On a good Sunday the officials reckon that they have had  half a million people attend, and that is on a small stretch of coast.

The QE2 is making good progress on the AIS , she is doing 17.5 knots and was leaving the Isle of Wight heading across the channel to the French Coast, she will have to travel up the French side of the channel due to the traffic seperation zones .

I can't believe how many people are expected, I've had to change my posotion tomorrow from the Little haven Pier to the Noth Shields fish quay so I can rush from there to the ferry terminal to get on the Queen of Scandinavia!

Still it should be a good day providing the weather!

Well you should be able to take some pretty unique photographs of the QE2 from on board the QOS - hopefully you will post some here  :-)

This ship attracts the crowds where ever she goes rain hail or shine!

No doubt this being her 40th birthday cruise which is even more unique will bring a few extras out.

She always draws a crowd in Hobart and always brings the good weather with her.

There is a slight problem the Queen comes in at 7:30 and by the time I am on her it will be dark, but I will try but if it's too dark, I won't bother. :-)

Hi Kevin

It will be a very difficult task to take any decent photographs if it is dark. I've tried before to take photographs a night from a moving ship (even with movement at berth). However you might just get lucky, so good luck  :-)

Its not just her 40th Anniversery cruise. It is for many/ most of the public to see her for a final time before she is fitted out to be a floating hotel and permantly moored in Dubai. I will be out later on to get some shots and will sort them out later.

Hi Brian

Hopefully the person who usually provides the AIS feed for the Tees to the Tyne will be back on line shortly - not a "good" time to be off air!

This is the timetable for the QE2 and its good to see she is on time:

11.15 - Flamborough Head, Yorkshire
12.00 - Scarborough
13.00 - Whitby
14.00 - Tees Bay (Redcar/Hartlepool)
15.00 - Sunderland
15.30 - Whitley Bay
16.30 - Tynemouth

17.00 is the time that she is meant to commence her journey into the Tyne

Weathers looking ok at the moment provided the rain keeps off - slight wind but nothing to prevent the QE2's entry.

Heres hoping she comes in early at 19:00 not 19:30, but 10 guesses that it will be late again and I won't get 1 decent picture.
I hate the Queen of Scandinavia's timetable now, I cannot wait till October when it comes in twice a week in the afternoon. :-)
But thats too late, I won't see the QE2 in October. :-(  :-D

Unfortunately I cannot get any photos now as the Queen leaves at 11 but I will get my cousin to take some tomorrow. :-(

Hi All

Just a quick report back on the eventual arrival of the QE2 to the Port of Tyne (North East England).

Owing to wind conditions the QE2 made four attempts to enter the Tyne, succeeding on her fourth attempt. The ship was due to enter the Tyne at 17.00 but eventually managed the job at 19.00. Luckily by that time the gray skies, winds and occasional rain showers had passed and we were left to see her  glide in illuminated by the setting dusk sun.

Marvellous sight to behold, first time in the Tyne and a first for me, never having seen her before.

A great reception, firewotks, horns and a very large crowd - well into the 100.000's that I predicted earlier today.

Hope to start posting some photographs after having my dinner :-)

I will keep a eye open for them steve.
You would be suprised how many people flocked to Redcar seafront to see her. Even more up the south gare, had to park right down past paddys cove and walk up. Alot of dissapointment as she sailed by on the horizon. Not even close. She never even paused!

Hi Nathan

Sorry to hear that - it sounded from the fact that a small flotilla was to sail out to her from Hartlepool that it would at least be pausing in Tees Bay. Di you mange any photographs or was she too far away?

Hi Kevin

Nice to see that the captain of the Princess of Norway went out of his way to take his passengers and ship well off course to get a sight of the QE2 when she came out of the Tyne on her way to Imjuiden - even stopped the ship to get a better view  :-)

Yes i got one picture, but still she is only regoniseable by her red funnel, to be ohnest she was that far out she looked like any other ship. Of course i didnt keep the picture. There was that little boat, but she managed to keep up with the QE2 as she didnt stop.

As for the HMS Ark Royal, god knows what happend to her. Knowing my luck she will of sunk off saltburn.

Hi Nathan

Oddly enough there was a Royal Naval vessel, looked like a Fisheries Protection Squadron Patrol Ship, with QE2 when she was off Whitley Nay but seemed to quickly depart. Don't suppose anyone knows who she was?

Hi All

This from The Shields Gazette web site @ http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/QE2-visit-was-minutes-from.3205490.jp

"QE2 visit was minutes from being abandoned by DAVID MacLEAN

THE arrival of the QE2 was just minutes from being cancelled after the liner was battered by strong winds.
Winds of up to 20 knotts whipped across the sea, causing the ship's Captain to consider abandoning the visit at the final moment.
Crowds watched nervously as the liner made three failed attempts to enter the Tyne, turning away at the last moment over fears she could smash into the South pier.
With the tide set to turn at 7pm, Captain D. W. Perkins agreed to make one last attempt to enter the Tyne at the winds died down.
If it had failed, the liner was set to carry on its journey to Scotland, without stopping in the north east.
After one more achingly slow turning circle, the ship finally managed to make it up the Tyne to the joy of the crowds on either side of the river.

Hi Nathan

I don't mean the "local" Fisheries Protection boats (we have one here in North Shields - St Oswald- http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=351178) but the Royal Navy Patrol Ships, such as HMS Severn etc - check out:

Hi all,
I stood outside for about 2 hours before I hit the pub on the Lawe Top at South Shields , in the pub there was a lad who had a friend on the pilot boat and he kept us up to date with what was happening.

what I cant understand is the approach the QE2 took to enter the river , it was from a northward position !!!
most ships I sea enter come from a more of an angle to line up with the lights on the fish key. I know that the QE2 did turn towards that position , but was it not a late manouver, where as most ships line up on the run in about 3 or 4 miles out, I just thought it was a queer way to bring the ship in!!

When she did come in it was worth wait !!

I thought she was going to go to Jarrow and then be turned before being moored up ? It looks like this will   have to happen tommorrow.

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.php?mmsi=232089000

Did anyone notice the 20 mile speed run this morning to Flamborough Head at almost 26 Knots!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Cawky,

I was the lad on the pilot boat, that was my brother-in-law in the pub!

The reason the ship made her approach from the north east, is that the flood tide set south across the piers.  You'll see nearly all deep drafted/large vessels making approaches from the north east, especially during a flood tide, that's just the way it's done.

Hi Alan

A large round of applause to the Tyne Pilot for managing to get her in  :-)

One question if I may - I noted that at one stage two of the Tyne Tugs ventured a couple of miles off and it looked as though they were going to tow QE2 in - was any thought given to towing her in?

Hi Steve,

The tugs were just going out to be nosey and take a closer look.  At no stage did they consider towing her in.

The best policy for a safe entrance through the piers is a good speed.  This helps reduce the effect of the tide and wind on the ship.  If you make tugs fast your max speed can only be about 7 or 8 knots, so if a ship has her own power we always make tugs fast in the harbour after the speed has reduced to about 7 knts.

Hi Alan

Makes sense - I was quite amazed by the "experts" standing around me on the Spanish Battery, claims that the Captain of the QE2 was "show boating", that the QE2 was only calling in to the Tyne for water, that she ditched a load of ballast to get into the Tyne on her 4th attempt and "Look the Princess of Norway managed to get out without a problem" (Dohh). Leave it to the professionals that's what I said
I suppose the Tynemouth Lifeboat was being "nosey" as well - the crew must have had a touch of worms as they couldn't sit still, in and out, in and out.

Looking forward to seeing QE2 leave tonight - another photo opportunity.

I am so pleased on the last attempt that the ship entered the tyne.
The Captain was determined to enter, being from Wallsend originally. so it said on the radio just before.
I am also very lucky to live near the quays so had a walk down to get some pictures.
I did go to Tynemouth at 4.00pm yesterday, but left at 6.00pm thinking it was not to be. So happy on all fronts.

Yes, many spectators went home after the third attempt, especially as by that time the heavens had opened and the rains descended. I suppose only the optimists, myself included were left but it was still quite a crowd!

Great to hear you will on board - Lucky so and so - one for the C.V.
Give me a wave - more than likely will be at Tyne Street (North Shields)- just to the right of the old High Light.

HI Shieldslad,

its a small world ,and it was nice to meet your brother-in-yesterday. I like your answer about the direction of approach for deeper drafted vessels, every day is a learning day! What draught you class as deeper? Is it over 6 metres.

What they swung the QE2 ,was there much room, from were I was on the bridge above Market Dock it looked tight fit?

Are you staying on the ship to Edinburgh, like the pilot who brought the QE2 in?

Regards Cawky

PS what another good turnout tonight, next we will welcome the QM2!!!!!!!!  one day maybe?

Hi Cawky

Yes another good turnout despite the torrential rain - what weather  :-o

I was listening to the instructions passing between the Tugs and the Pilot and it was down to 15 metres from the quay wall at one stage - well within tolereances I'm sure.

Alan and the "main Pilot" were decanted from QE2 with Alan bording the City of Letece? for here entry into the Tyne.

Excitement over on the Tyne - back to Car Carriers  :-x

Hi Steve/Cawky,

Just got back in from the City Of Lutece.  It was a bit choppy at sea, but managed to get aboard without too much trouble.

It was indeed tight during the turn for the QE2 and also a little tricky coming around the bend at Brighams, but all in all it went very well. Looking forward to her next vist!

Regards

Got absolutly drowned tonight watching the QE2 sail, but still a good night.
Got talking to a guy where else but from the 'North East Tourist board!

Now that Royal Quays is finally finished being modernised he said we can look forward to many more cruise ships coming to the Tyne next year as they are realy pushing it to be on cruise ship companies schedules.

I said that was great but how or who on earth came up with the (I use the word likely) 'music' played from the barge when the QE2 came in, it was like a listening to a dying whale!

Apart from that I think they did a great job.

He went when I mentioned how nice visiters will like Royal Quays, but how about when they look out the other side of their ship and see the derilict old 'Middle docks' and when are they going to spend a few more millions tidying that up also,or better still make it a cruise ship dry docks and make some real jobs for the lads! :-)

Hi Steve,

A strange hat indeed and yes it was me!!!  The captain stayed inside - he was a bit too busy for waving duty.

Shame about the poor light and rain, but it's been a great couple of days.

Hi Shieldslad,
there was a good turnout last night ,considering the weather. Just took a look on theQE" webcam and she looks like she is anchored in the Firth Of Forth.

Thirs a question a few people werre talking about last night:-

"Will the Queen Mary 3 be able to fit in the Tyne?"

A lot of folks were saying she is to long or to big,but Ihave just had a look aon her facts on the Cunard website and she is about 170 feet longer. Could this be to large for Brighhams bend.

Hello Cawkey
The biggest ship to leave the Tyne if my memory serves me well was the 'Esso Northumbria' she was at least three/four times(tonnage)the size of the QE2 and had the additional problem of her beam and she went 'round the bend'.
I think they even cleared some of the small boats out of the way to give the tugs more space.
So I would say no problem!

 :-)

Hi Tynesider
I remember the Esso Northumbria, but with her she just sailed out.with the QM2 she would have to come in then to leave they would have to swing her up at Jarrow, so this maybe another snag.

Hi Cawky

Unless tings have changed the swinging distances are:

Vessels of up to 180m can swing off Tyne Commission Quay.
Vessels of up to 300m can swing further upstream at Jarrow Slake.

No doubt Alan (Pilot) will confirm  :-)

Hi Steve

I have been doing some calculations as Cunards website is in impeial .

The QE2  is  963 feet long  by 105  wide
the QM2  is 1132 feet long  by 135  wide 169 feet longer

Now for the conversion
the QE2  is  293Metres long  by 32M  wide
the QM2  is  345Metres long  by 41M  wide

There fore I doubt the QM2 would be able to swing in the river, mind having said that I have been playing on google earth with the tape mesure tool andit does look possible to swing a length of 345 Metres , but this does not take into account of the breadth !!

Saw your two photos tonight in the Shields Gazette, they were very good!

Hi Steve/Cawky,

Swinging distances are about right.  The swinging cirle at the slake is 360m but you obviously need to allow enough room for tugs, therefore 300m is about the max length for swinging.

The QM2 is too long to swing so if she ever came in she would have to go the out the same way she came in.  The beam is generally no concern.

Hi Alan,
I bumped into the lad I was talking to in the pub last night in The Vayager in  South Shields. I think we have had our wires crossed, his name was Stu and the person he knows drives the pilot boat, his name is John. You must now him.

Hi , I have just read this letter in the Shield Gazette,I thought it would be good to reproduce it in full:-

" As a passenger on the QE2's 40th anniversarytour,Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the great reception they gave the ship when finally docked at your very impressive Port of Tyne Docks.
As we were very late owing to the strong winds, the passengers were surprised and delighted that so many people stayed in such awful weather to see her sail into the Tyne, and looking at the photos in your newspaper brings it all back .
  Well done to all concerned.

Mrs Anne Greatwood,
Bury "

I hope everyone that watched the QE2 come in enjoyed this ladys letter.

Regards Cawky :-D  :-D  :-D
