Shipping News and information / Re: Ships sold for scrap
« on: April 09, 2024, 07:52:04 AM »
Good Morning Manuel,

The picture stated the submarines were of the SAURO class which seems this could be correct as 518 is a museum ship in Genoa, 519 decommissioned Apr 2005, 520 in Jun 2010 and 521 in Oct 2003 and have been laid up in La Spezia Naval Base. Wikipedia reported the three were sold for scrap in 2023 but no date.  It seems the SEAWAY ALBATROSS is being used to transport Italian naval ships to Aliaga for scrapping.  I notice as you say it is currently anchored in the harbour off La Spezia with its destination as Aliaga with an ETA of 13 Apr 2024.

Thank you for your help which is much appreciated.

Alan

I came across this picture of a heavy lift ship transporting 3 SAURO Class submarines.  Does anyone know the name of the heavy lift ship, where were the submarines loaded and when it sailed.  Also where were they being transported to for scrapping and when did they arrive.  Many thanks

Thank you so much for the information, very much appreciated.

I have been trying to find details to no avail, but you have come to the rescue.  I did read an article stating MEUSE, MONTCALM and CASSARD will follow from Toulon, two will arrive from Brest they being ALBATROS and GEORGES LEYGUES and the D'ENTRECASTEAUX from Lorient but have found nothing confirming these ships have in fact left under tow and arrived at Bordeaux.

Hello Manuel

I think you will find it was the German frigate NIEDERSACHSEN F208 (Bremen Class Type F122) that was towed.

I also get confused in how registration numbers are allocated to military warships.  As you say the COCKCHAFER has been allocated 4500163 which is in fact not an IMO number as was SCARAB 4909393 but the others BEE, CRICKET, LADYBIRD and CICALA seems to be issued with IMO numbers but I have not been able to find what GNAT was allocated.  I can find no reference or site where warships are allocated their non IMO numbers which begin with 4****** and therefore do not know where photographers who post there pictures on this site get these numbers from.  These non IMO registration numbers are not displayed on the ship as IMO numbers are displayed on merchant ships in fact warships along with certain other vessels are not allocated IMO (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMO_number). Maybe there is someone out there who knows where warships Non-IMO registrations numbers are issued and where they can be found.

BEE                   8891015
CRICKET           8878051
COCKCHAFER   4500163
GNAT           ??
LADYBIRD           8891027
CICALA           8891443
SCARAB           4909393

Shipping News and information / MILITARY IMO NUMBERS
« on: July 26, 2022, 05:18:00 PM »
I understand that military ships are not issued with IMO numbers as merchant ships are but seem to have numbers beginning with 4******.  Where are these numbers obtained from and where can they be found and listed?

I know merchant ships are issued with an IMO registration which is kept for the life of the ship even when it changes name.

I hope someone can direct me to where I can find the registration numbers that are given to warships.

Many thanks

Alan

Was originally sold from scrapping at Aliaga but has now been resold and not now being scrapped.  Renamed EL CAMINO.

According to my records the two KINGFISHER Class ships that were at Southampton were the KINGFISHER and CYGNET.  They were both towed from Portsmouth on 28 Feb 96 to Southampton.  KINGFISHER was later sold, (date unknown) and renamed KINGFISHER OF SPARTA and was again renamed (date unknown) SANTA ELENA.  CYGNET was sold in 1997 and renamed DUANA S and was reported as being used by a drugs cartel.  This ship was seized by the Moroccan Navy and renamed LEXIS.

Also REDPOLE (Ex RAFAV SEA OTTER) was towed from Portsmouth to Southampton on 28 Feb 96.  This was sold in 2000 and renamed BADTZMARU, later renamed RV LIBERTY and in 2012 was renamed SEAMAN GUARD VIRGINIA.

The other two of the KINGFISHER class, PETEREL and SANDPIPER, were sold to C. and H. Heuvelman B.V. (Netherlands) in 1991 and both sailed under their own power from Portsmouth on 19 Apr 91 and 25 Apr 1991 respectively.

I hope the above is useful to you.

Best regards,

Alan

Thanks Phil regarding the new IOW ferry I wondered when that was going to arrive so something to look forward to.  So have to wait and see what happens with GOLD ROVER now as when they berth them at FLJ after being laid up at Fareham Creek they usually are waiting to be towed out.
