Title: Strait of Belle Isle
Post by: Paul Bradshaw on August 18, 2017, 01:42:54 PM
It appears there is increased shipping in the Strait these days. The limit must have been moved north?

Maybe it has to do with the speed limit to protect the whales in the Gulf.

That is a good point! I checked the iceberg limit and it seemed normal at 47 deg. with 9 bergs identified in the area of the Strait. The whales have been showing up deceased at what seems to be a high rate? I always thought there was no option to cross the limit as a bypass? It must be left to the Shipping Companies to decide. I see that Oceanex has introduced a temporary surcharge but is absorbing a portion of the added cost due to the speed limit change. There is an effort underway to identify the location of the whales. Possibly, if successful this may allow for targeted speed limit zones.
