Title: CARIBOU / SMALLWOOD
Post by: Phil English on September 30, 2011, 10:58:04 AM
For our Eastern Canada posse:

The Caribou and Smallwood are expected to arrive at Alang on Monday 3rd October. It's the last day of the current beaching tide, so all being well, they will beach immediately on arrival for demolition to commence.

I was just wondering if anyone can confirm that the Caribo & smallwood made it to the beach at Alang, India?

Hi,

if you look on Equasis, the status given to both ships is "to be broken up" so I presume they have been beached.

Regards
Cedric

No, they are not yet beached. They missed the beaching tide on the 3rd October and latest were due to arrive at Alang anchorage PM yesterday local time. Next beaching tide is not until Oct 10 - 18th

The Equasis status merely confirms that they have been sold for scrap.

Stefan,

Visitors with photographic equipment are not usually welcomed at Alang demolition yards. It's therefore unlikely that any photos or videos will be posted, unless we have any seafarers on these particular ships, or Alang workers, as active members !

Hi,

if you want to catch an update on the breaking of the ships, keep an eye on Peter Knego's MidShipCentury. He goes to Alang to rescue furniture and other stuff from ships which he then sells on his website. There is also a page with pictures of ships on the beaches so pictures of these two may also appear

Just wondering if anyone heard the latest on the ships? And phil, are you getting your information from a website?

Jeff, all

Both ships arrived at Alang anchorage on 6th October. My information is from local Alang sources, not from a website.

Unfortunately not Dean. I am not in personal contact with anyone. I just receive a market bulletin from an Alang shipbreaker which contains this information.

Phil These 2 vessels had a huge following around Atlantic Canada and many cared what happened to them.We are passionate about our ferries here. So on behalf of all of the Canadian shipspotters thanks very much for keeping us informed!

You are very welcome Jarrod. I realised that there was a lot of interest in these ships from the messages on the forum earlier this year. I only wish I was in a position to obtain some photos for you. Sadly I doubt it will be possible.

I just picked up the paper and saw the article and picture on the front page. Still hard to believe they're being scrapped. They look surreal sitting on the beach side by side like that. Seems like yesterday I was just a kid going on board.

at least they were born, lived and died side by side.

thats more than most sister ships can say.

Pretty strange seeing robust, modern ferries like these being scrapped.

Sturdy vessels. When in service both sailed the North Atlantic, at times in conditions that would make your hair turn white.
So why would no ferry operator show any interest in adding them to their service? What would be the circumstances that made them only suitable for the breakers yard?

I think only one reason, they are very expensive to operate.

I think only one reason, they are very expensive to operate.

Indeed. Plus: vessels reportedly worn out from their hard work. Furthermore: bad maintenance, and inconvenient layout. Those things could be taken for granted in a good market, but alas, the market for used ferries is still really bad. The beach at Alang is currently full of "young" ferries which probably would have seen further employment in a different market: besides CARIBO and SMALLWOOD, there are currently: PRIDE OF TELEMARK (1983), EASTERN LIGHT (ex-SEAFRANCE RENOIR, 1981) and WESTERN LIGHT (ex-SEAFRANCE CEZANNE, 1980, completely rebuilt 1990).
