« on: November 17, 2021, 04:53:51 PM »
Does anyone know the future of MV ORCADIA (Ex-Calmac Ferry Saturn IMO 7615490)?

The former Pentlands Ferries Ltd ferry left Scapa Flow in Orkney Scotland on the end of the towline of Ocean Tug CHRISTOS LX1 for the long towed voyage to Piraeus in Greece on 12/11/2021

Breaking or Further Use? ???

Rumours of the three classic 1970's Liners being utilised as "Accommodation Ships" was just a rouse then?

The Scottish Government have announced that Caledonian MacBrayne Assets Limited (CMAL) are the 'Preferred Bidder' to continue to operate the Hebrides & Clyde Ferry Services with their State-owned Fleet in the recent Tendering Contract , in which Serco Marine tendered their bid. (19.6.16)

Where did the maritime tradition come from of renaming a ship for her last voyage to the Breakers for scrapping? Any good answers

I thought that there were big plans to extend the GOT harbour site anyway to allow four or more larger ships to use it at one time? This would allow Greenock to have a direct service to the States as well as connections to the so-called 'Hub' Ports. Peel Ports is a huge maritime company and surely have the money and direction to have Greenock higher up the Global Sea Trade table.

Back in the late 1970's , we were onboard a Cross Channel ferry having left Dover destined for Calais. One hour out , the wind and sea got up to a force 10 from the north east. We could tell the ship wasn't moving fast and slowing to 'tread water'. Over the tannoy , the message wasn't good. The ship couldn't get into Calais on the rising flood tide. We had to divert to Le Harve further down the French coast. In all , we spent just over 24 hours onboard pitching and tossing but eventually we did gain our 'sealegs'.

Shipping News and information / Is LYSBLINK SEAWAYS being Broken?
« on: April 23, 2015, 08:13:14 AM »
On February 17th 2015 , the DFDS Cargo Ship 'Lysblink Seaways' (IMO 9197313) ran aground near to Ardnamurchan Point in western Scotland. After a week , she floated herself with the help of a high Spring tide.

Towed to Greenock and drydocking for inspection. After some weeks in dry dock , she was released under tow and taken the short distance over the River Clyde to Rosneath Jetty on the Gare Loch and laid up. There has been much speculation that she has been deemed 'Uneconomical to Repair' and could be Scrapped very soon?

Shipping News and information / Saturn Becomes Orcadia

The 1978 Caledonian MacBrayne Car Ferry SATURN (IMO 7615490) retired from her long service on the Firth of Clyde in Scotland on 30th August 2011 and immediately put into storage.

After some four and a half years of idleness at Rosneath Jetty on the Gare Loch , she eventually found new owners in the form of Pentland Ferries Ltd. She was towed across the River Clyde to Dales Garvel Dry Dock for an overhaul on February 25th 2015. She was officially renamed ORCADIA in April 2015 and her working life will be extended as a freight carrier with some ferry cover in the Pentland Firth in Orkney and will hopefully see her 40th year in service.

She finally left the Clyde on April 22nd 2015 for her new life in the North.

The term 'Tug Boat' just demeans the Offshore Vessel 'Kingdom of Fife' :(

"Sailing By" is such a soothing piece of work.

There are severe doubts over HMS Plymouth's future too.
