Title: Ship Made From Ice Cream Sticks - Thor

Hi All

This piece from ITV News here in the UK raised a smile on my face - courtesy of

"Ice cream ship sets sail
7.23PM, Sun Jul 15 2007

A Viking ship, made entirely from ice cream sticks has set sail from Dutch port city of Lelystad is set to embark on a North Atlantic crossing.

'Thor' was constructed from five million recycled ice cream sticks glued together by Robert McDonald, his son and more than 5,000 children from 18 schools in the Netherlands.

Constructing the ship was a labour of love for Robert, but also carried a message of hope.

At the age of nine, McDonald lost his entire family, both parents and six siblings in a gas explosion. Robert himself was the only survivor, confined to a hospital bed for five years before fully recovering.

Doctors had told him he would have to remain handicapped for the rest of his life.

He said: "It's to show kids you can do anything. It's not what the doctor tells you, or the nurse tells you, it's what you tell yourself. I'm out to show that. I'm not handicapped."

Don't suppose anyone has a photograph of this vessel

Hi Steve
It would appear that this ship was completed a few years ago but the only pictures I could find are rather small.

It should be named "Eskimo Pie".  That is where my ice cream sticks come from!  I have used them to make HO scale lumber loads for flatcars, etc but definitely have not tried making boat out of them!

Where is she traveling to? and do we think it will have AIS or be a boat alongside which does?

Hi Bruce

She hasn't set off yet but the plans are to cross the Atlantic to Canada/USA.

I wouldn't have thought she would be shadowed by a support ship as that would take away the sense of adventure.

As to AIS - can these be made from ice lolly sticks

Hi All

Evidently the Thor is on her way to Dublin - see this link to the BBC News web site - from there you can find a link to a daily web log maintained by the crew:

Hi Steve

The link is not concerning Thor, but the Sea Stallion
which is crossing the North Sea now.
It was delayed in Norway awaiting the wind.
