Help and Advice / Re: Obtaining reasonable photos from old halftone images

Hi Pieter,

Agreed. I was focussing on describing how to first get rid of the dots. Once that is done, enthusiastically dabbling with every adjustment feature in the armoury is worth a shot to see what comes up best. That's a bonus of being retired, plenty of time to mess around happily, achieving nothing.

All the best,

David

Halftone printing is something that came up in a private conversation recently. Out of curiosity I did a search to see if there was any mention of it on the site, and didn

My small collection of ship photos from the early sixties were posted around 2012. Jadran's interest in them was heart warming. It's nice to meet those special people in life who make you feel good about yourself. Thank you Jadran.

Joking ? Really?
The following are my own personal experiences from the mid sixties.

I was a radio officer and it might be worth pointing out that R/Os worked to GMT and not ship

Coincidentally, while doing a bit of factual research prior to posting a further photograph here,  I came across a P&O fan website and discovered an unauthorised copy of my Shipspotting picture of the Oriana.  I was not best pleased.  I have refreshed my view on photo copyrights and came across this document.

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/481194/c-notice-201401.pdf

Interestingly, in your case, it refers to the copyright of photos of copyrighted objects. An example given was a photo of an art gallery where many copyrighted objects would be on display. In that regard, the photo of the copyrighted objects is seen as being incidental to the photograph and not subject to those copyrights. So it could be suggested that unless a photo of a ship focused specifically on the name or livery but instead related to the form of the ship and its environment, the copyrighted aspects of the vessel were incidental to the photograph and did not apply.

Well, it looks like I read their intentions correctly, although if I had been the recipient of the letter I'd have felt both threatened and blackmailed by its content, rather than seeing it as a simple offer to purchase. Here, we have a citizen's advice bureau where I could obtain a free assessment of the legality of such a level of coercion. I'm almost surprised that there wasn't a closing paragraph giving you 24 hours to make your mind up before they sent Jimmy The Leg Breaker round to assist you in your decision making.

I wonder how many prospective passengers would be deterred from joining them if they knew what threats potentially awaited them for publishing their holiday photos.

The communication regarding photos appears to have had two elements, one of which appears to have been a low key suggestion that the photographer ought not to be publishing photos of their ships because of their copyrights etc. The other element indicated some interest in purchasing them. It might suggest that together, the primary interest is in the purchasing of the photos and the copyright issue is a bit of arm twisting to reduce the price. I suspect that if the writer declined their offer as unsuitable they

In 2015 I was contacted by a film producer asking me if my Shipspotting photo of the Angelina Lauro could be used in a short documentary picture. It was to be about the New Zealand artist Robert Rapson. The production company also wanted to be permitted to use it in associated promotional material. It wasn

Quite by chance I found my photo of the USNS Card on Flickr quite a few years ago. The poster had not only helped himself to the photo but also included a link to the LOF-News web site to add some substance to his posting.

Having looked at some of his other thousands of posts I got the impression that he had no concept of copyright and was just collecting and posting anything that he liked the look of.

I added a disparaging comment to his post which presumably he has never read, however, since I left it, it has had a further 800+ views and I doubt he has gained much credit for his efforts.

Shipping News and information / Re: Let's share collections of lighthouses
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:31:01 PM »
Years ago when I was scanning my collection of colour slides I found that apart from the ones of ships that most interested me, I also had unknowingly collected a small number of photos of lighthouses.I looked around on the web to see if there was any particular interest in them and found that there was. Russ Rowlett at the University of North Carolina had and still has a great site covering  lighthouses from around the world. He was happy to have copies of my pictures because having been taken almost 50 years ago, they were of historical interest. I found more interest in Europe too.

Russ's site is well worth a very long look if lighthouses take your fancy.

I'll sort out some pictures for you.

Best Regards

David

Help and Advice / Re: Help Needed - Manchester Liner?
« on: August 06, 2013, 02:27:24 PM »
Hi Chris,

I gave some further thought to this question after posting. Of the three ships, from the photos that are available online, it appears that the bridge front of the Manchester Port was wood faced. The Progress and City were white painted metal. The quotes that state the City was first a mine-layer from the outbreak of war and then a naval support vessel in the Far East, appear inconsistent with the OP's grandfather's recollections of his Northern waters voyages on the ML vessel. Whilst far from conclusive, it suggests that the picture provided might be of the Progress rather than the City.

Regards,
David

During the war it was a practice not to have names permanently displayed on vessels, but on a name board which would just identify them when and if displayed in port.

The photo is a dead ringer for the Manchester City which was delivered in 1937. In the Pictorial History of Manchester Liners, it is said that the Manchesters Port, City and Progress were delivered in 1935, 1937 and 1938. Their tonnages are very similar and it could be that they are look-alikes. It does state that in 1939 at the outbreak of war the City became at first a minelayer and then a Naval Auxiliary working in the Far East. All three survived the War.

@Davy; your link took me to a collector page with a bunch of page options, rather than the event-specific page that I think you were hoping to post...

Of course, since I can't read Italian, I couldn't go any further from there!

The link works okay for me. After the collector page opens up, a screen opens and a video is played.
