The UK Competition and Markets Authority has said that it intends to give Eurotunnel-backed English Channel ferry operation MyFerryLink six months to close its Dover-Calais service.

The authority, which last month succeeded the Competition Commission, said today that it was provisionally confirming the decision taken by the commission last year but not implemented after a Eurotunnel appeal against it.

Its decision is a preliminary one, however, and the authority said that it would render its final decision next month after considering responses to it.

The authority said that Eurotunnel, which owns three former SeaFrance vessels operated by MyFerryLink, effectively had over half the Dover Strait transit market and was funding the ferry operator
