Does anyone have a name that for some reason stands out,or is always remembered ?
Mine is "Tropical Morn",conjures up an atmosphere so well.
Or the other extreme-"Time is Money" !!
-
A personal favorite for me has always been the 2002-built bulker CRUX, or more specifically, it's original name of FRAGRANT ISLAND. Though, the yacht DUMB LUCK cuts a close second.
Other names I have seen such as WIDE CHARLIE, NEW HISTORY and MORNING NINNI have been on the amusing side as well.
Kind Regards,
Kyle

I have a soft spot for the WOOLLOOMOOLOO: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/search.php?search_imo=9584499
as well as the classic FLIEGERSKOSMONAUT DER DDR SIGMUND J
-
All I could remember (Except the WOOLLOOMOOLOO & those already mentioned long-namers) were:
FUNNY GIRL - http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1380755

Beside all that, here are more creative names:

I have seen various odd names .especially on yachts, but the best one for me was a small motor cruiser named AFTER YOU, when I enquired about the originality of the name with the owner, I thought he will tell me that because his boat was just a small one he gives way to larger ones, but the answer was quiet different and unique.
When he meets some girl,to impress he just tells her that ne named the boat "After you"....what do you think, smart and witty...eh.
He wouldn't have to rename the boat when he embark on a new love venture.

ASPREY - http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=385043
Asked why a rather obscure Greek owner operating small tankers in West Africa should choose my name, Unibros told me that it had no particular significance. They had merely asked their London agent to choose a name "with a bit of class" - in this case the royal jewellers in Bond Street, London.

everytime I mention that Willy [IMO 9268241] is due in, it makes my daughter snigger and give a sly grin to my wife!!

Better make sure your daughter doesn't see this photo.

There was a British skipper-owned coaster in the 1970s called ONTIC. A play on the slang phrase "on tick" meaning on credit. His next ship was called MORTIC (More tick)

Here is one of my favourites for a lack of modesty. One of the first pics I uploaded to the site

I cannot think how Immensity could not be great

Really a nice collection of extraordinary names so far.
"Woolloomooloo" is one of my favourites, as well as "Catch 22": http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1840148
and also "London 2012": http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/search.php?query=LONDON+2012&x=22&y=14
On the other hand, I also like lyrical names like "Lowlands Sunrise" : http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2339879
Cheers, David

Sadly, there was never a sistership:

Just remembered these 2 same looking heavylifters:
LIFT-ON - http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1767700
LIFT-OFF - http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1813523
And of course, BigLift's ships with names that make no sense:
HAPPY DYNAMIC
HAPPY RIVER
HAPPY DELTA
HAPPY STAR
HAPPY DIAMOND
HAPPY SKY
Oh & just came across a happy tanker called HAPPY FELLOW.

Also a couple of old hits ---LOVE ME TENDER and PLEASE PLEASE ME.
The Monkees demand their recognition, too!

And now, for something almost completely different...

Interesting to see reference to METALLICA above.
The Greek owner's son was into heavy metal music, so a number of ships in the fleet were named after metal bands.
At least, that's how the story goes!
-
Yes it's true. This is the Vafias family, principals of Brave Maritime and Stealth Maritime. Other vessels included "Heavy Metal" and "Nirvana"

The old Maassluis-Rozenburg ferries DE HOORN and SCHILDTHUIS raised a snigger or two among English-speaking spotters in the late 1960s
-
We had a ship visit Napier called Great Motion, favourite not really, just always wondered what the thinking was behind it:

Is that the poop deck aft?

Thanks for all the posts, all very interesting and some really amusing.

This one is also a strange one:
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/search.php?query=FORWARD+BRIDGE&x=16&y=10
with the bridge place on the rear end.
In Dutch the Beffen (http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1044053)
is a funny one as this means pussy licking :)
Then you have asol cheap ships: for 4 euro

Still struggling to find a suitable comment to your middle one -Pilot Frans!
Best give up.

I met a bulk carrier, the Irene's Ambition in Venesuala in 1974 You can imagine the cracks on board the ship I was on.
-
What about the Indian tanker FLYING OFFICER LIRMAL JIT SEKHON PVC....and there were more exotic names in that series..
-
This could be one to add to the list in the future :D
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/boaty-mcboatface-could-be-the-name-of-200m-research-vessel-after-public-vote-a6942551.html
Only those who have absolutely no relation or knowledge in ships could come up with names like that.
-
Try to pronounce this one - DVADESETPRVI MAJ (IMO 9582427).
-
My favourite strange ship name is:
"Fliegerkosmonaut der DDR Sigmund J
-
"Graig David"..... (https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_David) coincidence, perhaps, but still
-
"Happy Fellow".
"Happy Girl" makes me smile (IMO 8800298).
Maybe the crews met in some port or other ,so there is the "Happy Bride" (IMO 9181900).
-
My last ship was named SPRING DELIGHT & her identical sister was SPRING DESIRE. We traded regularly to Guayaquil & a Rio Guayas pilot asked me what the names meant. I told him that one was hopeful for something nice to happen while the other, mine, got lucky!
-
The Liberty Ship STAGE DOOR CANTEEN stands out for me.
Propslip

Propslip.
Interesting to google STAGE DOOR CANTEEN and see what was behind the name.

KRK from former Jugolinija. If for no other reason then because it is such a tongue breaker for many people ;D
-
Many thanks for all the interesting ,and some amusing, replies to this thread.
Colin.
-
One of my favourite names : "Baltimar Comdiflate" IMO 8812954
Last in a series of "Mini Multipurpose vessels" build in Shanghai between 1987-1992
It summarised the experience of the building supervisors on the shipyards
Too complicate , too difficult and finally too late :)
The yard had a bit of explaining to do to their workers ;D
-
No contest for this one!
"BJ Queen"
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=908212
-
"Alligator Pond" ,IMO 8007511.
Remember seeing her a few times in the English Channel around the year 2000.The name was unusual and for her she seemed to be in strange waters.
Wondered if anyone knows why she was operating around here in those days, and also if there is a photo of her with that name?
-
My favorit name- SOMNIUM VITAE, seen here on shipspotting.com
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2779330
Brgds Gusev
-
Oh AMSMTG, I was really hoping that BJ Queen was a suction dredger. Or a hovercraft. Sadly not.
Two from me. A decade ago I saw an Aran Islands ferry at Doolin in Ireland called the Happy Hooker.
And apparently Patrick Stewart has/had a yacht in Vancouver called "Make It So" - or so my Vancouver resident brother informs me...
-
"Somnium Vitae" ,translates on Google as "Lifes Dream",what a fantastic name. Named by the owner?captain?
Assume the car down aft is his pride and joy,not part of the scrap cargo.
Colin
-
Titan Uranus -remember being in the newspapers, with picture, sometime ago, saying the name had to be changed due to constant sniggering, jokes in radio communications !!
-
Here's a couple for you
"ARAGONITE ISLANDER" a Klavness bulker seen loading Cement at Bevans Northfleet last Centuary !!
or
"REBORN" a good geared 5000 tonner seen arriving Rotterdam carrying at least her TENTH name !
