Amsterdam-based shipping company Spliethoff has placed an order for six multipurpose vessels at the Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., shipyard in China.

The vessels of this new R-Class are designed in accordance with the Polar Code and are therefore highly suitable to trade in remote areas such as the Arctic. Moreover, they will be optimized for fuel efficiency and equipped with scrubbers to reduce their environmental footprint as much as possible. All at sea: Norwegian Star cruise liner broken down and drifting near Melbourne
Article by Cloe Booker for The Age newspaper.

Distressed cruise liner passengers are in tears with the ship they're aboard broken down and drifting off the Victorian coast.

Preparations are under way to tow the Norwegian Star, carrying more than 2000 passengers, back to Melbourne from where it is about 70 kilometres adrift.

The ship, which departed from Sydney on February 6, lost power about 30 km off Cape Liptrap, near Wilsons Promontory, early Friday morning.

A man phoning from the ship, who did not wish to be named, told Fairfax Media "devastated" passengers aboard the ship were crying.

"It's a bloody nightmare," he said.

"We're stuck in the middle of the ocean. It's scary. Especially with Melbourne's weather being quite changeable." [MORE]

Hi Everyone,

I regret to inform you all that Derek Lilley has relinquished his position of Webmaster due to personal reasons.

As many of you may know, Derek has been apart of the Admin Team since 2007, working in various roles such as Photo Admin, Webmaster and Advisory Webmaster.

This is a great loss to the Admin Team but we wish him all the best.

At the same time, I would like to welcome David Asprey on board as a Webmaster.  :)

Best Regards

Article by Cameron Atfield for the Brisbane Times.
Article source: brisbanetimes.com.au

A cargo ship made its way down the Queensland coast and through the Great Barrier Reef without its crew knowing how to use the bulk carrier's electronic navigation equipment.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority detained the Panama-flagged bulk carrier, the African Alke, in Brisbane on Thursday.

An AMSA spokesman said a port state control inspection found the 177-metre ship's bridge watch-keeping officers were unable to show they could operate the vessel's Electronic Chart Display and Information System.

That system helps ships navigate Australia's defined coastal routes, including through the Great Barrier Reef.

"The vessel was detained because the safety management system had not identified a lack of on board familiarisation training in the use of ECDIS," the AMSA spokesman said.

"The ship's operators have flown an ECDIS trainer in from Singapore to train the crew.

"AMSA will release the ship from detention once it is satisfied the crew have been trained to an appropriate standard and can demonstrate the expected level of competency."

The African Alke remained berthed at Fisherman Islands on Friday morning.

Comment has been sought from the ship's operators, MUR Shipping.

Maritime Union of Australia Queensland branch secretary Bob Carnegie said the African Alke went through the Great Barrier Reef during its journey from Malaysia to Brisbane, via Mackay.

"It's just another example of circumventing Australian laws and doing whatever they want," he said.

"They'll see the Great Barrier Reef destroyed and they'll see massive environmental damage done to this country as long as they can save 30

This kind of thing has happened on a number of occasions; the worst of which was in 2005 when 20m seas smashed windows as flooded the deck below the bridge.

Hi Everyone,

For some time members have requested and offered information about good shipspotting locations.  There now is a means for this to be formalised and part of our category structure.

There is an option to not only to record directions to a location but also show images and street maps in its area.

Support material for the new category can be reached by clicking this link or alternatively by going to the Support tab on the Home Page, under Category Site Standards, and clicking on Shipspotting Locations for a helpful FAQ titled Shipspotting Locations. It is a subcategory of Harbour Overview Images.

Please help to make use of this new feature by adding information about your favourite location.

Best Regards
Cody

Hi Everyone,

We're currently in the planning stages of creating some resources for members whom have had their images removed, to help get their images to meet site standards and get their photos back on site. This would be in the form of a short video tutorial covering a single topic such as how to straighten a horizon etc.

To make the videos as helpful as possible, multiple editing programs will be covered. We would like to know what photo editing program you use.

Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.

Best Regards
Cody
