Title: Summary pages for vessels.
Post by: MattB on December 14, 2014, 10:16:58 AM
I'd just like to say, whoever thought up the idea of having a separate summary page for vessels certainly gets the thumbs up from me. It's very informative and I especially enjoy the layout.

Well thought out and presented.

Thank you very much. :D

Looks good, Ken

Could the photographers be in alphabetical order please (it seems to be by numerical membership number at the moment)?

Hi Derek,

the subscription to the World Ship Society, is it annually, too (like Miramar)?

Cheers,
Jens

Is the very useful Summary page working properly?

By way of example, I started with the photo of DOLCE X at http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2357436
so summary page is http://www.shipspotting.com/ships/ship.php?imo=8216124

This then tells me that there are 20 photos, in three categories and by 15 members.  So far so good.

But then in "Ship Names in Database" is says there are 20 photos of DULCINEA, which is certainly not right.
I think that there are 13 as DULCINEA, 6 as DOLCE X, and 1 as ALTAMIRA

Isn't that what it is supposed to show?  Or have misunderstood this?

That means Henrik has to fix something!  Earlier it was showing a correct number of all photos per each name.

Hi
I miss all the names to the same ship. The ship's first name when built and last name when scrapped. It would also be useful with the year for each ship.

Hello David,

The Summary Page is as you say a bit of a misnomer, it only works with an IMO number so is limited on content, it was introduced without pre. discussion and I think but am not sure the intention was to show ships with a given IMO number and to record the Members that have uploaded it to the Website.

It does have its uses should you wish to check if you have uploaded a photograph of a given ship and if so how many of the vessel you have on the Website, that would overcome for example the problem if uploading the same ship at the same angle or location.

The biggest drawback from my point of view are the inaccuracies with regard to Categories and with this in mind I did ask the Admins to check this and amend any errors they come across in this field, I personally have corrected many so maybe the newly appointed Photo Correctors could deal with this, I apologise if this is already the case, I am no longer in the Frame.

Kind Regards
Ken

I think that it's definitely still pretty useful as it is - it's giving more useful information than the simple "this ship" link for IMO ships, especially as you say, Ken, showing wrong or outdated categories (very useful as we work through fishing vessels, in particular - with excellent help from a couple of members in particular I am pleased to say).  For Admin doing corrections, working with this in conjunction with the Correction Tool's searching by name/part-of-name takes much of the tedium out of our endeavours.

My assumption, from the design of the page, is that it was precisely intended to show the individual ship analysed by Category, Member and Name.  If this last worked, it would make spotting the mistyped or just varied name (eg I or 1) so easy to spot.

Would be much useful if there was shown a list of all names with number of photos per each vessel with IMO.

I agree with David and Denis, a useful tool in addition to the other correction tools.

As Denis said a list of ALL names with number of photos per each vessel would be very helpful. This would make it easier to check for photos in the wrong category (just lately I've dealt with a vessel built as general cargo, then converted to gas tanker and then again converted to cement carrier...).

Would be much useful if there was shown a list of all names with number of photos per each vessel with IMO.

I meant as all names (as links) as how they are written for a given IMO vessel, Like:

E-SHIP 1 (number of photos)
ESHIP-1  (number of photos)
E- SHIP 1  (number of photos)
E - SHIP - 1  (number of photos)
etc

Such would be useful for a quick look & fast correction of group of wrongly written names. Though I think such should be visible only to staff, while members will see only list of ex-names & current name with number of photos (as how it was initially working once the Summary page was introduced).

Already existing in the Summary list of categories this vessel can be found in is pretty useful to see incorrect categories or wrong IMOs.

Regards,
Denis
