Steve Ellwood kindly added this information to my past photos of Tupper:

"Hi Kier  Thought I would add this piece to add to the ships historical record:  Fire crews battle Nova Scotia ship blaze Canwest News Service Published: Saturday, October 11, 2008  DARTMOUTH, N.S. -- Halifax fire crews were working Saturday morning to quench a stubborn fire on a decommissioned Coast Guard vessel tied to a Dartmouth, N.S., dock.  Halifax Regional Fire Capt. Dave Meldrum said firefighters responded to the call at about 4:30 a.m. local time after smoke and flames were noticed on the top two decks of the vessel named Tupper when in the service of the Coast Guard.  The vessel, which is now under private ownership, was empty when firefighters arrived and is currently undergoing repairs.  "It's not in service, there is no crew onboard, no obvious power source," said Meldrum. "We don't understand what started this fire yet."  By mid-morning, firefighters had stopped the fire from spreading and were drawing up their plans to contain and quench the fire, said Meldrum.  Meldrum said officials from the Department of National Defence and the Coast Guard were also on the scene at the Dartmouth Marine Slips complex.

Shipping News and information / Ex-CCGS Simon Fraser
« on: May 05, 2008, 05:03:58 PM »
I know this has been brought up before and there have been a few photos posted awhile ago, but does anyone have up-to-date information regarding the Simon Fraser. She departed Halifax for Italy to be converted into a mega-yacht a year or two ago. Since then there hasn't really been much except for one photo.
Equasis still has her listed as a buoy/lighthouse vessel, so has the conversion not yet been completed?

Info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Kier

Another question; what is the situation with CCGS Bartlett? It says on Wikipedia she was decommissioned in 2006 but the new Coast Guard website has her listed as operational.

Any info would be great.

Does anyone know when CCGS Provo Wallis is scheduled to come back to the Maritimes? As far as I know she's still in Victoria.

Thanks,

Here's the CBC article

Pretty bad; nobody was on watch when the sealer capsized.

-----

"Divers recovered the bodies of three seal hunters Saturday from a disabled fishing vessel that capsized about 70 kilometres north of Cape Breton while being towed by a coast guard icebreaker.

Lt. Lora Collier of the Canadian navy said only two members of the crew of the Acadien II survived. Divers were still searching for a fourth missing sealer who was aboard the overturned fishing boat.

The 12-metre vessel, with a crew of six from the

Shipping News and information / CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:39:21 AM »
Just found out that the largest Canadian Coast Guard ship, the Icebreaker
Louis S. St-Laurent is scheduled to be decommissioned and replaced by 2017, an outstanding 48 years of service. However, 9 years is not that long to design and build a ship of this type, and the CCG commissioner stated she may only have 10 more years of useful service left, at the most.
The Coast Guard will need more icebreakers soon, as Pierre Radisson is already 30 years old, and all the other icebreakers and light icebreakers will require a major refit or replacement sooner rather than later.

Cheers,

Kier

Shipping News and information / CCGS Simcoe decommissioned
« on: December 20, 2007, 04:34:03 PM »
I'm not sure if any of you know, but the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Simcoe has been decommissioned and given the number 2007-01. I don't know when this happened, obviously this year.

Sad to see the oldest ship in the CCG go. She was built in 1962.
