Title: M/V Superfast X
Post by: CedricH on January 05, 2007, 05:51:05 PM
Hi everyone,

the Superfast X has been sold to Veloia Transportation according to Faktaomfaryg and The Ferry Site. I posted this information on the Dover Ferry Photo's forum and someone told me that SNCM had bought/chartered the vessel. Do you have any more information?

Regards
Cedric

Hi CedricH,

A few months ago Attica Group, owners of Superfast Ferries, sold the "Superfast X" to Veloia Transport, owners of SNCM. The delivery to the new owners is expected at the end of January 2007.
The "Superfast X" is now deployed in the Zeebrugge-Rosyth service, a passenger/freight service between Belgium and Scotland. The "Superfast X" will be replaced by the "Blue Star 1" (IMO: 9197105), a ferry owned by Blue Star Ferries, another subsidiarie of the Greek Attica Group.

Many thanks ehouri ! I have desesperatly tried to find her new name for a few months. I think Jean Nicoli is a fine choice. On the one hand she will be the first ship ever to recieve this name, and on the other hand they keep the Fraissinet/CGT/CGTM/SNCM tradition to honour Corsican heroes (Napol

This afternoon the Superfast X is given the new name: Jean Nicoli.
She is still in the Antwerp dry docks.
Maybe after this renaming she will leave pretty soon.

I have no idea.
But i just looked on the shipplotter and i can't find her anymore, so there is a big chance she left Antwerp.

On her way to her new destination!

Yes, she did receive new paintwork. She has a blue hull and blue funnel. "SCNM" is written in the same blue on both sides forward on the white superstructure.
I saw her in Antwerp Ship Repair last Sunday, Feb 11, and the painting was well underway, but not finished.
She was, unfortunately, in an impossible place to photograph behind trees and a concrete wall (right behind the "Spek en Eieren" restaurant for those who know the port).

she must be registered as "Jean Nicoli", because AISlive shows her with the new French callsign FNKG.

Presently (14.02./07.30 pm lt) she is still moored in Antwerp.

Hi Klaus,

You are right, on my shipplotter she is already shown as Jean Nicoli and still in Antwerp. I just looked on the Belgian site for pilotage and she is not listed, so I think she will stay in Antwerp the next days.

Hello,

I'm new here.
I work at Radio Holland Belgium.
I am working on Jean Nicoli these days. She will stay until 20/02 or 22/02, at Antwerp Shiprepair. There is still a lot ongoing onboard, so maybe it will be postponed.

Post by: madcat on February 15, 2007, 07:36:15 PM
Hi,
normally, after leaving the dry dock, she must sail directly to Marseille, in the south of France.
After this, she will sail between Marseille and Corsica, and sometimes Sardinia.
SNCM may sail her to South Africa (Algeria or Tunisia) with freight only.
I will give you more informations when I'll see her in mediterranean sea.
Best regards.

I think she looks really great ! I can't wait to see her with my own eyes but there's still nothing about her on the Marseille port schedules... If someone here has any information about her arrival in the Med, it would be nice to let it known.

Hi,
she has been transformed but the interior was the same. Casino has disapeared and the sauna/jacuzzi was forbidded to the passengers. It was the only transformation with the whole remplacement of greek/english signalisation in french.
She may be come back to Le Havre, I will try to make photos of new interior.

Hi,

I've got a question on the replacement of the Superfast X
Do they use the upper car decks of the Blue Star 1?
I saw her in Zeebrugge once, not much time after she had arrived and the ramp was not lowered for acces onto the upper cardeck

I had the chance to test SNCM standards on Pascal Paoli last autumn and I was very well impressed (except for the fact that is unacceptable to make public announcements only in French, apart for the one after departure, also in Corsican speech); it's easy to understand why they've closed the casino, less why they've closed the sauna/jacuzzi. This could have been an interesting service; for the same reason I couldn't understand why CMN cut off the swimming pool from the Girolata; the ferry had a reasonable speed for being useful only on day crossings to Marseille, where it would have been an iteresting service, but even if you don't need it, I can understand to build a ferry without swimming pool, not to remove it from a ferry which has it!

Anyway....no matter! So the Jean Nicoli does not come to Nice?
Title: Re: M/V Superfast X
Post by: madcat on March 09, 2007, 12:44:45 PM
Hi,
yes, but you would make some reclamations for the jacuzzi...
I think that she won't go to Nice for a simply reason: 205m length, it's too long to enter in the bassin.
So Marseille will be a better place.
Regards.

Thanks for the news ! :-) It appears she's going to her home port Ajaccio (which is my home port as well, by the way ! :-D ), too bad I'm living on the main land, I will only be in Corsica in late April/early May. I hope she will be laid up there (as there are still no schedules for her, I guess she will be laid up for a few weeks), even if I suppose she only goes to Corsica for her official christenning before sailing to Marseille and being laid up there.

In the ferry section, you can see pictures of here which were taken on March 23rd. And she is spotted in... SOUTHAMPTON !!!!! :-o  :-o What the hell is she doing in Southammpton ???
I suppose Veolia/SNCM use her as a Ro/Ro or a vehicle carrier until her definitive Corsican schedule is announced. I guess it's more profitable to operate her that way than to simply lay her up in Marseille...

She was indeed in Southampton on the 23rd March. The ship's agent was listed as Wallenius Wilhelmsen, which suggests that she may be on a short charter to the scandinavian line.

No, CMN is only mentionned in the article to remind the fact that Jean Nicoli was bought at the time CMN/SNCM alliance renewal was far from being sure, and that SNCM needed extra capacity to compensate the possible CMN "loss".

We still don't know anything about the buyer...

Anyway, it's possible Jean Nicoli will do at least an official SNCM crossing. She is on the Marseille Port Authority schedule for tomorrow, bound for Algiers.

Jean Nicoli is scheduled for 3 trips to Algeria. Then nothing plannes as fas as I know.
It is sure that Veolia transport is trying to sell this ship, but according to "Nice-Matin" paper, the Italian company that was supposed to buy it wasn't able to prove it had enough funds to buy it.
