So I guess the Stena Exploer's days are numbered.

Seems like the low price of crude is of benefit to tanker owners.
From Tradewinds the 440,000 DWT is being taken out of Layup.
Wonder where it was laid up?
 Heres the story

Shipping News and information / Books about Tankers.
« on: January 13, 2015, 04:25:58 PM »

Hi all.
I am seeking to buy a book about post war oil tankers.
Something about the story of the VLCC and ULCC, their owners such as Ludwig etc.
The race to build the biggest.
About the changing economy and what led them to been laid up.
Am looking for something with plenty of pictures and text also.
Not really interested in a book about one particular company.
So far I have found 2 books both from the same publisher.
And was wondering if anyone can recommend a book that would meet my requirements or indeed if anyone has these books and could recommend either of them.

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/supertankers-anatomy-and-operation.html

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/tankers-an-introduction-to-the-transportation-of-oil-by-sea.html

The first book looks tempting at over 600 pages but am afraid it might be too technical and aimed at colleges etc.
too like a textbook

So, many thanks in advance for any tips.
P.S  I wouldn't ask, but there are very few reviews of these books to make a choice.
P.P.s Please nothing TOO expensive, also.

Shipping News and information / Price fixing in the boxboat trade??
« on: November 27, 2013, 03:16:02 PM »
According to the Financial times the Eu is investigating leading Container shipping companies over anti trust regarding price fixing..

IMHO..It's hard to see the P3 alliance been green lit under such conditions.

Pretty Cool idea..I should say.

So what would people like Google to do a street view of Next??

The Maersk Triple E ?? Or the Queen Mary ?
Or a Russian Typhoon??

Make the Port Of Rotterdam or Antwerp???  Though that will never happen I guess.

Shipping News and information / Cold War Submarines
« on: November 07, 2013, 10:05:49 PM »
For those interested in Cold War Submarines BBC 2 in the Uk are showing a documentary
about the activites of the Submarines, during the Cold War.

Details are sketchy at present..The channel has many programmes about the Cold War in a new season , which I think starts tomorrow on 8th November with a programme about Cold war Jet planes.
Called "Cold War, Hot Jets"

Have a link hear from BBC Media Centre and this contains confusing information.
i.e Cold War, Hot Jets is the title of Tomorrows programme but the BBC media centre
just has a listing under Jets in the Cold War..Without given the actual title.

The Submarine part(s) is just titled the Silent War  But that in no way means that the actual Programme will be called that...And NO RELEASE date is given.
Furthermore the blurb says  the Silent war is in TWO parts..But near the Bottom of the page it says 1 x 60 minute show.Hence the confusion.
Here's the link.

Shipping News and information / Boom time for scrapyards?

Tanker: Rates rally on demolition news - The onset of the largest demolition program in a decade will see a rallying of rates in the tanker market, according to E.A. Gibson Shipbrokers. Twenty-three very large crude carriers (VLCCs) are set to be demolished in the current calendar year, with similar scrappings expected up to 2016. Presently, rates are at a record low; figures from Clarkson's show average earnings this year for VLCCs hauling 2mn barrels of crude oil are at their lowest since records began in 1997.

Shipping News and information / Question about North Sea oil
« on: June 20, 2013, 07:36:27 PM »
 Greetings.
I wanted to ask a question about British North Sea oil.
From time to time I see a VLCC for Fawley on this site.

And my question is sort of related to that.

But before I ask my question, I would like to give a few stats,
Which I hope will explain the reason for my question.
Since 2006 Britain has more oil than what is produced in the North sea.
BUT these imports are about 60 % of Britains' needs..Despite the fact that the British North sea produces enough oil for about 94% of britains' needs..
So, the question is
Why the huge gap??
Why is Britain importing 60 % and not 5-6 % of it's oil.
Why aren't refineries in Britain processing this oil??
Is it because of  Enviromental reasons?
Or is there some Economic gain in selling this oil, i.e does it make the balance of payements look good and make Sterling a stronger currency?? Is it to do with having good foreign reserves of Currency???  Is the imported oil cheaper than the Brent crude??? Which I understand to be a nice blend of oil?

I was struggling to understand, as we are hearing bad economic tidings across the whole of Europe. It just doesn't make sense that oil refineries are not built to handle this oil..
It would create thousands of well paid jobs..Or would it lead to higher petrol prices and a recession??
And lastly where does Britain export this oil to?? And where does the refined oil come from.
And why are refineries in Europe, closing Down.
Phew , that's a lot of questions..But it was just something I thought of.
I know people follow ship traffic on here..So somebody should know of the economics behind it all. ;D

Shipping News and information / Information on Arklow shipping newbuilds.
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:03:51 PM »
Hello everybody.
I read in a magazine afloat.ie that Arklow shipping was to move into
The Handy sized Bulker market with the addition of perhaps 2x 35,000 DWT ships.

Does anybody know any more about this ,or anything else to do with Arklow shipping
newbuilds?  etc.?
I sailed with the company as an engineer cadet/engineeer in the late 1990's
and was just curious.
Thank you in advance and happy new year.
