OOCL has announced on their website that they are enhancing the China New Zealand Service, with the fastest transit times for shipments to Wellington from NE Asia. They say the Wellington call will replace Port Chalmers in order to match changes in market demand in the New Zealand trade.  I'm curious what those market changes could be.

The changes will be effective with APL Denver's arrival in Shanghai in mid May.

Does anyone have good recommendations for locations that offer good views of ships in Jacksonville or Charleston? Thanks in advance.

Great discussion. I guess I qualified as a shipspotter when during my first trip to Rotterdam, I took the train out to the Hook and boarded the fast ferry that does the route to Maasvlatke and back. After we had returned I told the crew I wanted to stay on board and go one more time. Never having seen container shipping on that scale (my previous shipspotting had been limited to places like Miami and Tacoma), I had to see more. They were fine with that - didn't charge me for the second trip, and they let me go up to the bridge.

They are indeed useful. The schedules for Wilmington and Morehead City give a sense of the variety of shipping in those NC ports.

Here is an option if you're closer to the Inner Harbor. If you take Key Highway East after exiting I-95, you'll eventually see the Domino Sugar plant on your left. Right after you pass it there will be a left turn into a parking lot for the Under Armour buildings in North Locust Point, and if you are there during the weekend you should find plenty of parking. That is a good place to see bulk carriers discharging sugar.

Fort Smallwood is a decent vantage point, but there can be long waits for vessels. Also, you need to always be aware of your surroundings there.

Thank you for the tip. I've been thinking of taking a drive to that area to see what can be viewed.
