Hi,

Yes, it's a supportive server that shouldn't really be critical that has problems. We will try to get it solved today.

Henrik

Hi,

A major power outage affecting the public internet internet. Was a short break and site is available again.

Hi,

As Cederick Hacke says, we do not yet use https. It is not a big deal as we don't handle any sensitive data like credit card numbers ourselves. We will however move over to https anyway soon as it's becoming standard to do so.

Henrik

Hi all,

There was a javascript link on the site that caused initial problems. There are no threats on the site, and we try to have Malwarebytes to remove the block.

You can remove the block in your software as per the instructions above. If you do - please note that we never want you to click any download links and we never want you to run or give access to something on your computer. These pop-up questions can show up in your browser either if we have a bad advertiser not yet blocked by the ad agency we use, or if your computer is affected by malware already that does not have anything with shipspotting.com to do.

Regards,
Henrik

Tony Martin and andrecas,

It seems the whole site is blocked. There is this link for more reading:
https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1061

Not sure if that's good even, should there be anything else that spreads through ads or malicious forum posts etc.

Unless it is possible to clear the filters - uninstalling and reinstalling the Malaware software will likely work and be safest. And make sure you do not visit any websites while it is uninstalled.

Regards,
Henrik

Hi all,

Sorry for a late reply. I've spent all time I've had on trying to find the source of this problem.

A few suspected parts have been fixed, and I would appreciate it if the ones still having problems can let me know if there still is a problem, and if there is - please let us know what the problem is, a screenshot if there is text or anything graphic visible, and also the country you are in.

I have not had any problems with the site myself at any time with any browser. It makes it tricky to reproduce the problems. With Netflix and other services with a lot of resources and lots to protect in different regions, it is nowadays harder to fake the country to find geographical differences. That's where your feedback really helps out. I've had a few members email me just enough info to keep me busy working on finding the source, and done what I can until now.

Thanks all for helping, and feel free to send emails or post in this thread if you have any further info on the problems from now on.

To all of you that were/are affected - Thank you for your patience!

Regards,
Henrik

Hi all,

We have had many things to deal with the last month. It finally seems we start to have an OK status again.

We have been moving the servers, and at the same time the mining problem and mobile redirects have appeared in multiple ways. Status right now is that we will have no more downtime due to the server move.

The coinhive and mobile redirects have been removed completely from the site. It's clear that none of these have been "real" viruses, so your computers as a visitors should not be affected. As soon as you close the web browser or browser tab - it should all be gone.

Thank you to all of you that have been reporting messages from browsers and warning messages from anti-malware software etc. It's a big help, especially since some of these things only appears once per 24 hours, and also only in specific countries.

Regards,
Henrik

Hi all,

I would just like to say that the problems some of you are experiencing is caused by bad ads added by our third party ad agencies. We are working on finding the exact source, to be able to block this out.

The Error from database is now gone. It is not related to the coinhive problem.

Henrik

Hi all,

It's nothing new. It's just that a few browsers are starting to make warnings when we are not using https. We are in the process of moving over to this, as most other websites are, but due to the size and functionality we provide it's a big job to do. If we do it now, several things would probably stop working.

A reminder and security tip: make sure you are not using the same password for all services. Especially services that concerns money or your email accounts. Don't use those passwords on other websites, like this one.

Henrik

Ken, yes, not sure why! There's a saying that the further away the sysadmin is - the more likely a system is to go down.

Can add that the long time it took to solve was that the system behaved like it was the target of a heavy brute force attack, which wasn't the case.

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of information. We've been working on getting the site properly visible again.

It should all work fine now. We removed a faulty server. Nothing old is lost, but can't speak for the last 24 hours in case uploads were timing out. The site may appear a bit slower as we're replacing this.

Henrik

Hi Frans,

Strange. We use Chrome for testing a lot. Perhaps log out and back in after an upgrade?

Hi,

I checked it out. Doesn't seem like we have any general problem with the site's upload functions.

You can try to log out and in again. This will replace cookies and other data that might at times get corrupted. If it's not working it's possible to remove the cookies for the site and try again.

If the list of locations doesn't appear, something is wrong already and upload won't work.

Henrik

Consultations and review of site standards / Re: Topic 2: Focus and exposure
« on: September 28, 2015, 05:15:35 PM »
Hi all,

Here comes an explanation.

There are the icon, small and middle size images on the site that are converted automatically.

The "original size" is as the uploader added it. It's kept by us to both give the most detailed image, but also to be able to generate new thumbnails (if needed).

When uploading, many photographers don't consider resizing, sharpening, contrast, saturation and similar filters which should be used to make a good photos.

The "fit screen" obviously does not look the same as it's hugely depending on screen size.

A 1300 pixels photo should look good in original size on most regular screen sizes of today. Can look bad in full screen if the screen resolution is larger in pixel size - like 1920+, 3840 or more... and if it's on a 40+ inch monitor/projector etc.

In my opinion the full-screen and original size it's so many factors affecting the image quality.

The middle size images (most commonly viewed) is 800 pixels in width (always shrinked from at least 1024px, which increases sharpness), and if that one is looking bad - for sure all the other larger versions will look a lot worse and likely completely unacceptable.

Regards,
Henrik
