Site related news, functions and modules / Re: Soon - New website design
« on: February 25, 2022, 09:58:08 AM »
Hello Hugo, many thanks for your efforts in designing a new website. I can imagine that this is a huge task and not an easy one.  At first glance the new design looked pleasing and fresh to me but -  what really counts of course is whether the applications have been improved or not. That's what any change should be about and  what really matters for the members of this site. Please take my remarks as constructive hints to consider some details.

Firstly it appears to me that the shown picture in standard size (between thumbnail and fullscreen) is to a certain degree less sharp and clear in the beta-version, what would surely be not acceptable if confirmed by other members. So this should be checked....

The comment overview section on the front page is vital for the community and should therefore be shown to the same extent as hitherto, i.e. some twenty comments should be visible (there are just seven in the beta-version).  And all comments on a certain picture should be visible by scrolling down a bit from the photography. Tearing things apart which belong together isn't a good idea to say the least...

Another point is that the ENI numbers should be displayed under Photo details like the IMO numbers and should be clickable as well to show all pictures of a certain inland vessel. The description is an important  - and time consuming - part of a posting and the complete description should therefore be visible at once without having to scroll down too much. I'm sure that most members are not only interested in a photograph of a ship but also in the details and history of a certain vessel, so please let the whole description be shown at once like it is with the existing version. In the beta-version every detailed description is squeezed together and cannot be read in context - this is completely unacceptable in my opinion.

On the front page of the new version can be read : THE BEST Ship Information and Shipphotos. So let these information be well presented and seen at the first glance...

A further point is the background colour, it should be balanced and only have a small amount of white to be comfortable for the eyes. The pale blue of the current website version is a very good option which isn't too strenous for the eyes. Please consider this very important health factor as well.

Principally the current website is excellent in my view, so please do not change everything just to make changes. Each and every change should be an improvement to the existing and well proven website and this approach should be taken in consideration permanently because it is the key to a succesful new version of this site.

With the introduction of the beta-version planned for next monday already (or for the 27th of February ?) it looks like no more opinions from members want to be taken into account. I'm quite sure that most members aren't aware of the imminent change to a new version, it seems as if they should not be heard too much. Many members are employed and have little time during the week to consider the new beta-version. Please wait at least another week before deploying the new version to give all members a fair chance to react. Starting the new version hastily and without appropriate coordination with admins and members isn't a good start.

It would be very regrettable if the current succesful website concept would be ended without getting an improved version.

Please make sure that it is possible to return to the current version if the new concept has too many shortcomings and would be a deterioration of what the shipspotting community has now.

Once again many thanks to you and your team for your efforts up to now.

Best regards, Hans

Hello to all of you,

I fully agree with the above statement from Jens and hope that every photographer will include the ENI and/or IMO of an inland vessel if such figures are externally visible or known. Inland shipping is perhaps somewhat underrated by some members, but if you have seen the interaction of see-going and inland vessels in big harbours like Antwerpen or Rotterdam it's obvious that these are the two sides of one coin. It is a truly fascinating and perfect interaction between very different kind of vessels acting together like larger and smaller cogwheels of a clockwork and being absolutely dependant on each other. And the variety and often very interesting and long history of many inland vessels are really impressive. The more you know about the branche of inland shipping the more interesting it gets, in any case that's what I have experienced during the last years.

Best wishes to all of you and happy shipspotting !

Cheers, Hans

Hello mattyboy and all of you,

my opinion is that you should not give up a hobby for a woman.

There are many interesting and different things for both of you to discover during shipspotting. Explain to her some details of the ships you are watching and she will eventually build up a knowledge about ships and shipping. There are so many benefits for both of you to enjoy while watching the ships passing by : Nature, a great scenery, fascinating animals can be seen (my wife and I are keen birdwatchers, so this is really a good additional motivation), wonderful fresh air, sunshine and many other things. You can enjoy taking your meals at very special places having a great panorama at the same time.

Perhaps the woman you have met, mattyboy, will be inspired and "infected" by all these great experiences ? It should work if you are skillful and patient. And what about making a nice ship journey with her or some harbour trips ? And perhaps she is or gets interested in photography and takes photos by herself ? There are a lot of other subjects that can be seen during a shipspotting tour or on the way to and from these locations.

Last but not least it is very important, in my opinion, that you should try to visit a great variety of shipspotting locations if possible, so this should never become boring to her.

Perhaps try it this way, good luck and best wishes to all of you from Hans

Very shortly after accessing shipspotting.com the attached message showed up on the front page.

This message tells me to install a flash player update and it pretends that I use a certain obsolete version - actually flash player is not installed at all. When right-clicking on the message it still asks to start a download from some dubious site (as shown on attachment).

I use Firefox 60.0.2 with uBlock Origin 1.16.10 and NoScript Version 10.1.8.2.

I hope this information will be helpful in further analyzing the problem.

Best regards Hans

Help and Advice / Re: Ship Search by ENI
« on: November 28, 2017, 07:34:16 PM »
Hello Russell,
there are at least three websites where you can search by ENI number. On the site debinnenvaart.nl you have to click on item "Databank : De Binnenvaartschepen" and then enter the wanted number/or the ship's name, whatever your choice is.On the site binnenvaart.eu you should click on "zoeken", which means "search" in Dutch and fill in the wanted ENI. On both websites you can search with or without the beginning digit Zero. On the German site binnenschifferforum.de you have first to register and subsequently fill in the ENI in field "Erweiterte Suche", the site is in German language only.

Searching with google entering "ENI" plus 8 digits beginning with "0" will lead you to various websites, including the three sites given above.

Best regards Hans

Hi all, I would like to add some additional websites for those interested. This French site offers a lot of information about French and Belgian vessels, so have a look here www.vagus-vagrant.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=599&t=12409 , another excellent database for more than 18.000 inland vessels is the Dutch site www.binnenvaart.eu where in most cases you will find many details of a certain vessel. I agree with Ken concerning the ENI numbers, please add this number when posting an inland vessel so that the changes and history of a particular vessel are reflected. Since April 2007 this individual number doesn't change anymore when a vessel is sold to another country, which is certainly a big improvement.

Best regards Hans

Hello Ken,

it's sad to see you leaving the webmaster position in this way. However I think that you will leave with so much more positive memories over all those years - and that's what really counts.

So, thank's for all your work and efforts for this site, it was much appreciated by most of the members.

Stay healthy and keep on posting your pics and adding comments !

Best wishes from seaweasel
