Help and Advice / Re: COPYRIGHT
« on: August 08, 2015, 01:41:56 AM »
UK Govt website = The length of the copyright period will depend on when the image was created. Generally speaking, copyright in images lasts for the life of the creator plus 70 years from the end of the calendar year of their death. That means that images less than 70 years old are still in copyright, and older ones may well be, depending on when the creator died. ie if they died today then still in (c) until 2085.

This is pretty much the same in Australia as well.

Plus one to what Casaba said.

Help and Advice / Re: How do you find out the cargo of a ship?

Bunbury port (my fav.) :    http://www.byport.com.au/     (Just click on "Shipping arrivals")

Thanks David. That is handy for visits down south. It is a pity that Fremantle Ports do not provide the same detail.

At least here with Aloca No. 1 and No. 2 berths only caustic soda comes in via No. 2 and alumina goes out on No. 1 but that is about it and owe the vehicle carriers and livestock carriers are fairly obvious. With the vehicle carriers you can see what they brought in on the dock; caravans the other day and grain harvesters a few days earlier :)

Here in Western Australia my local port is Fremantle Port and Fremantle Ports has posted its "filming and photography" policy online which applies to the Port itself.  Interestingly the Port is in fact a State Government entity and hence not a private entity but I assume it can enforce its own rules in terms of its land.

The Antwerp Bridge [IMO 9297527] has assisted in the rescue of former around the world solo sailor Jon Sander who was bringing a yacht from Darwin to Perth.

More details in the ABC news report.

Help and Advice / Re: Possible Fremantle Pilot Vessel "Berkeley"
« on: June 21, 2015, 12:52:06 AM »
Thanks Peter. I thought I had checked http://marinetraffic.com but clearly not. I should have also guessed Hans would have photographed her as well :)

Interestingly as you note she has been working the various ports along the coast here. Sea trials does sound plausible. I wonder where she will be station.

Help and Advice / Possible Fremantle Pilot Vessel "Berkeley"
« on: June 20, 2015, 02:16:13 PM »
Hi

I spotted today what appears to be a new pilot vessel at the Fremantle Pilots berths. It is named "Berkeley" and has the number, MH9052 on her side.  I haven't had much luck finding out anything more about her.

Anyone have any information by any chance?

Thanks

Due to a block on Murdoch owned newspapers I cannot access the full article but apparently the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the "OCED is saying that economic gains from big ships are declining and that such ships have led to overcapacity and steep price cutting that will put financial pressure on ...

Shipping Watch also has an article on this topic and Maersk Line take on the matter.

USA Today is reporting that Azamara Journey [IMO 9200940] and Azamara Quest [IMO 9210218] are to an "unprecedented makeover."  The news story goes into more detail.

However, Maersk Line are still keeping the ships to 400m length and 59m beam - so far, it seems no-one is welling to build bigger than that!

Is that because harbour infrastructure cannot handle any bigger? I know here in Fremantle they have installed a new crane with an outreach of 50 metres and that is now the largest one here. No doubt this is still small by others standards.

The ABC [Australia] has an online article with video which provides some details.
