Shipping News and information / WAN HAI 272
« on: February 17, 2023, 07:47:58 AM »
Please excuse if already mentioned.

Has anyone noticed the WAN HAI 272 aground in the main shipping channel between Bangkok bar and the river estuary for more than 2 weeks now.

Any ideas as to what happened and progress towards re-floating her, i have noticed tugs and dredgers in the area in recent days.

Have any of them ever published a book or website or posted online?.

I have seen very few of their photos and it would be such a shame if they were never seen by us enthusiasts.

I once logged 108 ship movements in the New Waterway in one day in May 1984.

He had a fantastic knowledge of coastal shipping and produced many books and publications for ship lovers and enthusiasts, he will be sadly missed.

Shipping News and information / SHIP AIS DATA INPUT
« on: May 02, 2021, 07:09:21 PM »
I am totally reliant on ship ais, Marine traffic, to photograph ships.

Please correct me if i am wrong, i presume the destination data input is done by the ship.

Here are some recent examples of destinations,

CSN = Garston
BHK = Bromborough, can anyone explain those.
GSA = Glensanda
SEF = Seaforth, a new one for me which took a few minutes to guess.
LDY = Londonderry
NPT = Newport
MSC = Manchester ship canal.

A ship in the canal today just moved berth from Eastham to Runcorn and updated her ais immediately and gave the exact destination, a number of ships this last week are giving Liverpool as destination when they are bound for the canal, it surprises me when some ships give fully spelt destination and others are barely understandable.

Shipping News and information / Large tankers at Tranmere
« on: December 24, 2020, 07:58:14 PM »
Tranmere has been very busy for some time.

The Ingrid Knutsen berthed recently with a draught of 45 feet.

Do these large tankers sit on the river bed at low water? if so it must put an immense strain on the hull.

The River Mersey has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world so at low water after a 10 metre tide the river is very low, it is hard to beleive that there is enough water at low tide for them to float.

Shipping News and information / New service to Salford Quays.
« on: December 06, 2020, 02:11:45 PM »
Hi all,

There is a new service about to commence in to Salford Quays, formerly Manchester docks.

The ships will be discharged in one of the old drydocks,

The first ship will be Eastern Vanquish, she is currently just South of Penzance doing 9 knots.

It will be quite a sight to see a ship in the old docks as Salford Quays is now full of offices,studios,apartments,shops etc.

Shipping News and information / Stolt tankers in the Bosphorus.
« on: February 19, 2020, 02:25:50 PM »
I have never seen, photographed or seen on Marine Traffic a Stolt tanker in the Bosphorus.for such a big company with many ships.
Has anyone ever seen or photographed one?.
I was beginning to wonder if they are barred.
President Erdogan is planning a canal to replace the Bosphorus, i beleive this is mainly to stop chemical and crude oil from transiting the Bosphorus.

Shipping News and information / Port of Bangkok traffic.
« on: February 06, 2020, 12:50:10 PM »
The average ship movements in a 24 hour period is about 30.
From 17-00hrs yesterday to 16-00hrs today there were 43 on the daily ship schedule.
The geared bulk carrier, Great Ocean was inward bound this morning with a length of 591 feet, 180 metres, the biggest ship to arrive in the last 3 months.
I am not sure what the limit is in length because the river is quite difficult to navigate in some places.
There was a ship due this morning called, Kenta Maru, ship schedule suggested it was a reefer, i looked on Marine Traffic this morning and it was shown off the Iberian coast.
At anchor was a ship called the Limco Maru, so i thought it must be an error on the ship schedule, i looked at Marine Traffic again a couple of hours later and the Kenta Maru was approaching Bangkok pilot station.

Shipping News and information / Ghost ships on Marine Traffic
« on: January 16, 2020, 12:02:26 AM »
Can anyone explain.

Right now and almost everyday, there is a red echo indicating a tanker currently inward bound for Bangkok, ship name PATTHARA SAHATHAI 1, when you click on it it suddenly becomes the NORTHERN PEARL, a very large tanker of over 200 metres in length.

I can assure you have watched this image many times and even been standing by the river and there is absolutely nothing there, a ( ghost ship }.

Shipping News and information / REEFERS
« on: December 13, 2019, 03:32:58 PM »
Hi all,

Reefers are one of my favourite types of ships, i never saw one until i visited the New Waterway in the mid eighties.
Could anyone tell me which port is considered to be the busiest (geared) reefer port in the world, Bangkok must be a contender.
There are currently 8 reefers in port.

Shipping News and information / Port of Bangkok tides
« on: November 19, 2019, 03:14:25 PM »
Hi all,

I have never seen tides like this anywhere in the world, probably the most unusual?
The last 5 days the AM tide has been the main tide, at high water the tide very slowly ebbs for about 5 hours only dropping a metre or so then comes in again, because the river level is already high you cant even see a flow, there is a small rise in river level then the tide ebbs for about 10 hours.
From Thursday there is only 1 tide per day for the following 3 days, not like Southampton where there are 4 tides per day
The tides are very favourable for shipspotting if you are prepared to put the hours in.

regards,
David

Shipping News and information / LIVE AIS
« on: November 16, 2019, 09:41:34 AM »
Hi all,

i have just arrived in Thailand and was looking forward to using Marine traffic or Vesssel finder for live ship tracking.
After trying both sites, it became clear that i was going to have to pay for live tracking, 200 dollars a month for Marine traffic.
Does anyone know of an alternative site or way to access live movements for free.
I have used Marine traffic in the past from the UK to search Bangkok live and it worked fine then for free, may be this is how it will go in the future.?

regards,
David
