Danio, IMO 9218533 is reported to run aground today off the Farne Islands.
The local RNLI report the ship is in an awkward position for tugs but an attempt to refloat the vessel will be made on the next high tide.

Looking at her track on Marinetraffic, she just steamed directly for the islands, another case of fatigue again ?
Cheers, Dan.

Targe Towing vessel "Hemiksem" is in attendance.
-
Was in attendance. Hemiksem is now lurking near the shore and Danio is exactly where it started out; on the rocks!

The mighty BBC (and some others) tend to think that they can get away with it, and they usually do, essentially because one-person bands don't usually have the dosh to sue them for copyright. They have nicked my video on ocassion, which is why I put a biggish branding on, and why I moan loudly when they do it . . . they've never given me money, however!
I sometimes use individual photographers pictures from here and other sources when making video for www.shippingtv.co.uk, but always get permission - although it can slow things down, which is what the beeb don't like.
-
Is this another copyright infringement?
Absolutly!
They don't contact me before using my photo.

The Hemiksen has been in the Tyne since late last night and is still here!
Not exactly your big salvage tug with only a 40 ton bollard pull, then IF/WHEN they do get the Danio off what are they going to do next?
Reports say she is holed and needs a drydock and the nearest is on the Tyne and currently the Normand Pioneer is sitting in it :)
-
Seahouses RNLI had a video on the BBC web site today, showing someone walking round the ship. The hull, at least the port side, is intact.
The ship has fetched up on a big flat expanse of the rocks and looks as if it had been carefully placed there with a crane!
Also, I note there is no sign of the "special equipment" the RNLI were talking about coming to help. So I suppose that means 2 weeks camping on the rocks for the crew then until the next suitable tide.
-
Yup. We are currently on the Tyne sheltering from the weather until SOSREP make a decision.
6m swell out there at the moment. No weather for any tug.
-
She looks to be very much intact, well the port side at least. This talk of a hole by the press is likely to be the bow thruster tunnel, the UK media are not renowned for being accurate when it comes to maritime casualties. In fact im amazed they didnt caller her a tanker !!
As mentioned earlier she is sitting quite trim on the rocks, no list or apparent escape of liquids etc.
Maybe its a blessing she gounded on the run down to neap tides, imagine a big swell coming in and lifting her before pounding her back onto the rocks.
Lets hope for a simple salvage with minimal damage to the vessel or environment.
-
Slightly off topic here, but has anyone ever seen the bow thruster symbol painted on the stem of a vessel like on the Dario ? I have always been led to believe it goes directly above the bow thruster ?

Interesting ?
Cheers, Dan.

Hi Darren
Danio has a bloody great hole on the Starboard bow almost on the keel, look here and scroll down and watch the photo's http://www.seahouseslifeboat.org.uk/call-001-2-2013.html

Hi Dan
Just tried it on two desk tops and another lap top and works ok!
Photos are at the bottom of the link when you do find it, it will automatically scroll through about 10 pic's, look at the eighth pic of the hole.

What was that they were trying to tow her with?
The pilot boat?

That was the Seahouses Mersey Class lifeboat the Grace Darling 12-16
-
They couldn't have been serious about moving a grounded ship with the life boat could they? Certainly one would a few more horses that that would be necessary! ::)
-
I suppose the crew should just settle down for a boring wait. The tide will be around a metre higher on 26th March.
So that's another week's embarrassment for the Captain!
-
Reported attempted refloating awaiting more favourable tides/weather from 23/3. Meanwhile master has ballasted her down for stability. So far no reported leaks (bow damage purely local)
-
I would still bet on 26/27th March.
The tide on 23rd will not be a lot higher than it is currently but on 26th it is a metre or so higher. Added to that, the full moon is 27th March with spring tides around that date.
-
It's been rather entertaining listening to what the media and website rumours have been reporting.
Complete bollo**s compared to what was actually happening for the most part.
-
Has there been any official report as yet to determine the reason of the grounding ?
When I first heard about it and looked on Marinetraffic I saw that her course and speed never altered before hitting rock bottom.
Cheers, Dan.
-

No doubt MAIB will make an preliminary investigation, but not yet. They can hardly begin that while the ship is aground and the crew aboard. I would expect that the protocols for safeguarding the on-board data have already been established.

Hi Kelvin
The tug Hemiksom which has been here for the last few days sheltering from a 6m swell but has left the Tyne this morning and is rumoured to be the one contracted to tow her off,so we may see some action very soon.
Hemiksom shows to have only a bollard pull of 40 tons which is not the greatest to say the least but we will see :)
Interesting point next 'if'/ when she comes off will be is to where they will take her, I suspect not far with that hole in her Starboard bow.

UPDATE:
Just seen Hemiksom has entered the Firth of Forth maybe on her way home to Rosyth, but also we now have a larger tug due in the Tyne on Saturday the Lomax, much bigger tug and has a bollard pull of 80 tons.

One of my former tugs I worked on the KESTREL of J P Knights is also heading to Rosyth, but this was a pre planned trip, but you never know ...........

The tug Lomax left the Tyne this morning and has been lying off the Farnes all day, however probably due to very strong easterly winds and a big swell there was no action today.
Mike
-
Guess that means Lomax will be even later in taking up the duties at Exxon Fawley.
-
Don't be daft Chas! Timing? At Fawley? Anything more than a couple of days ahead and times go via the "When the big hand points at Mickey's nose ..." method!
Either that or 23:59.
Incidentally a chap named Andrew Jamieson has posted a couple of photos on Marine Traffic which show the predicament of this ship.
Maybe they should fit it wheels and reclassify it as "Amphibious"!
-

Lomax still lying off the Farnes in bloody awfull weather, swell 5/6m easterly 30 knot winds gusting 45 knots and not due to calm down till late Sunday.
It was so bad today they closed the Tyne to incoming shipping for a while so guess the crew of Lomax would love to be in Fawley :) but they are probably looking at a nice bonus if/when they get the Danio off, one local skipper said if the swell takes her further onto the rocks even if they are reasonably flat she's got no chance of coming off.
For the sake of the local wildlife and crew I hope all goes well.
Mike
-
It will be a no bonus effort, a contract has been signed, it's not a LOF.
Cheers, Dan.
-
thanks mike its nice tn know someone is thinking of us sat out here in these conditions. At least the seals are keeping us company.

Hi James
My Dad bless him was out on many salvage jobs as he was also a tug skipper, so I have some idea of the problems and conditions.
I think Thursday is the highest tide is this when you are going to have a go?
Best of luck to all aboard!

Good luck mate :), after being there in these seas you deserve some good news (and a good rest)!!
PS: Where will you take her? Blyth??
Mike
-
the weather is improving all the time out here. So i think the plan is to have a go at high tide tomorrow hopefully. Then yeh take her down to blyth.
-
The highest tide will be on Friday at 5.3m compared to Thursday's 5.0m.

Hi James
Guess you must still have a good swell still, whats plan 'B' tomorrow??
Those seals must be fed up looking at the Lomas! :)
Mike
-
they still seemed quite curious. Got her away at 3 this morning. Currently en route to blyth should be there around 3.
-
Well, there we go. All's well that ends well!
Danio appears to have got off the rocks at 02:59 today and is now heading at a gentle 2.5 knots toward Blyth, probably going to arrive there around 18:00.

Well done mate and pleased for all concerned that she came off ok, hope you have a rest in more calmer water!!
Best regards

Finally, Danio is tucked up in Blyth.
Now for the bad news for Chas; remember moaning about Lomax being late to take up duties at Fawley?
Well, this morning, it is approaching Flamborough Head, en route to . . Straits of Gibraltar!
Oh bother!
-
Hi Kelvin, little do they know but there is an ambush waiting south of the IOW.
-

Now showing ETA Fawley 30/3 1500UTC
-
Well that could cause some difficulty here. Vortex is due back from Rotterdam also on 30th.
Meanwhile, Southampton VTS don't seem to be aware of the Lomax arrival yet.
-
VTS are often unaware of arrivals, NAVE ATRIA appeared at the last minute, and the departures of the hopper barges did not appear in the 'sailings' list. Meanwhile Manu-Pekka is supposed to leave today, but as yet no tug is around to tow her !! When I once questioned them, they said they could only report what the agents told them.
Allan
-
And destination now changed again! Felixstowe, ETA 30/3 0100UTC
Perhaps DUTCH POWER is coming for the dredger? ETA 31/3 (currently on the Thames)
-
Looks a likely candidate. Manu-Pekka has had Whitehaven down as her next port for some while now.
Allan
-
I was sat there, sitting, patiently waiting for Manu Pekka yesterday and was of course disappointed.
I realise VTS are not responsible for the info or lack of it and I do usually feel sorry for them.
Still, they have an opportunity today; Lomax is south of Rye and still heading for Fawley.
I note though they have an ETA of 20:00. I suppose that means they are going to sneak in after dark!
Another example is Vortex; due back at Fawley from Rotterdam tomorrow. The only snag is she hasn't yet arrived in Rotterdam!
It was different yesterday seeing a Svitzer tug (I think it was Ferriby) assisting Phenix out of the Esso berth with the British Robin. I presume this may have been due to Tenax being in Sweden.
-
David,
I do believe you may be right re Dutch Power; it is due on the same berth (106) that Manu Pekka is currently berthed at.
