Hello,

During my research on MSC's fleet, I have noticed a trend which is that they have systematically increased the DWT and max draft on many of their ships.

A couple of examples:
- MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI, when delivered, the DWT was recorded as 240.854 and draft 17 metres. Now, it has been increased to a whopping 281.456 DWT and draft 18,85 metres.

- MSC FEBE, DWT was 228.149 and draft 16,5 m. Now 254.042 DWT and draft 17,75 m.

- MSC AGRIGENTO, DWT was 110.652 and draft 14,5 m. Now 127.952 DWT and draft 15,85 m.

A couple of questions: a) Why weren't the ships delivered with these larger specs in the first place? b) Are there any structural changes needed when increasing these specs? c) The TEU number can't be increased by these changes, but is this all for the reason that they can now carry heavier containers? d) How does this affect the fuel economy and the service speed of the ship?

Thank you in advance for any insights!

Cheers,
Aleksi

« on: October 08, 2023, 10:22:24 AM »
Hello all,

Sad news reached us today via his daughter Robyn with the passing of Clyde Dickens, our long time FAQ Administrator and loved ship photographer from Sydney, Australia. Clyde was known for his enthusiasm for ships, his kindness and for his high quality photos. He kept on photographing ships until the end even when he had to use a walker due to his high age of 94. Robyn asked us to make Clyde's passing known to all his friends at Shipspotting.com

Clyde, you will be sorely missed.

His legacy on the site can be viewed here:

Shipping News and information / Severe collision in Hamburg
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:57:00 PM »
This afternoon (Sept. 19) two container feeders, the CHARLOTTA and HANSE CONFIDENCE collided in the port of Hamburg. The CHARLOTTA rammed HANSE CONFIDENCE in the stern section and the latter is now in danger of sinking due to ingress of water in the engine room. I couldn't find any news report of this in English, but in German here:

Shipping News and information / Evergreen merges subsidiaries
« on: December 08, 2006, 08:49:52 AM »
From seanews.ru:

Evergreen Group Merges Subsidiaries

Evergreen Group announced the merger of its container shipping subsidiaries Evergreen Marine, Italia Marittima and Hatsu Marine (set up in 2002) into a single brand, Evergreen Line, as of May 2007, according to Dyna Liners.

Let us remind that as recently as March 2006 former Lloyd Triestino was renamed into Italia Marittima.

We'll see if this will have an impact to ships' names as well, or if it's just a financial change.

Found this:

Container ship run aground for a couple of hours early Saturday in the Kill Van Kull, a busy shipping channel between Staten Island and New Jersey.

Officials blocked off the area around the ship to water traffic during the incident, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Daniel Bender. The 853-foot ship run aground around 4:30 a.m. and was moving again by 7 a.m. The cause of the incident was being investigated, Bender said, and officials were to meet the ship when it docked at Port Elizabeth in New Jersey.

The Kill Van Kull flows between Staten Island and Bayonne, N.J., and is used by ship traffic to access New York Harbor as well as major ports in New Jersey

SeaNews, 15.04.2006

Does anyone know which ship it was?
