Title: MV Highlanders (ex MV Stena Traveller)
Post by: Jacques Maillet on December 03, 2010, 10:10:20 PM
I'm wondering if the MV Stena Traveller is in Bremerhaven yet?? I've seen she's still in service between Hoek Van Holland and Killingholme but she's due out of service soon.  I decided to start this one as the ship is being retrofitted since the other discussion on the Stena Trader (now renamed Blue Puttees) turned into Marine Atlantic criticism (I don't want any criticism over Marine Atlantic on this discussion please, only updates on the MV Highlanders).

No, the Stena Traveller is still in the Hook of Holland in service. She is due to go to Bremerhaven very shortly. I'll keep you posted as to when she goes.

Hi, You got me a little bit confused here. Marine Atlantic are chartering Stena Traveller and Stena Trader. (http://www.shipsmonthly.com/imageBank/s/Stena_Trader.jpg)

The other ships mentioned before have nothing to do with these ships. The Stena Hollandica and Britannica had been lengthend and have now being renamed. Stena has two Newbuildings now with the same names. But none of them is going to canada.

Jarrod had asked which ship was replacing Stena Traveller when she was removed from service ...
thats kinda how the thread migrated a bit to the Hollandica and the Britannica

These photos are two different ships. The one at sea is the current Stena Hollandica. She wasn't stetched. The one showing the ship in bits is the last Stena Britannica, showing her being lengthened in Bremerhaven in 2007. She is currently in refit, in Poland being converted to run opposite the Stena Germanica (ex Stena Hollandica). She'll be renamed Stena Scandinavioca.

The ship replacing the Stena Traveller will be the Finnarrow. She'll stay on the route until the first ship from Korea gets here.

At first, I didn't think too much on the new vessels, however, Marine Atlantic is sailing into a new era of travel and I'm supporting that!!  Out are the Gulfspan class vessels of the past and in are the fairly new Seabridger class vessels.  One downside I didn't like, but getting used to, no outside viewing decks on the bow.  The Gulfspan class had two forward viewing decks to look off and see the Newfoundland coastline!!  Oh well, maybe they'll put some forward viewing decks on future vessels in the fleet 8)  I'm still hoping they (Marine Atlantic)team up with Knud E. Hansen to design a larger version of the Gulfspan class in the future (just a dream I had) ;D  I even got names for the ships(I wouldn't change the names pretty much): MV Caribou (Flagship), and MV Joseph R. Smallwood (streamlined name from the current J&C)!!  So, still the Caribou and Smallwood for fleet names since it sounds familiar to everyone travelling to NL over the last quarter century and to those resisting change as well ;D

I never was big on naming the ship after Smallwood ,,son of a pig farmer, learned to speak and persuade by mimicking evangelical minister's....convinced poor ,almost distitute illiterate outport peoples that they wouldnt get a dime if he didnt get his way....sold off Newfoundland and Labrador's resources ,making her a reserve labor force for Ontario,to the extent that Newfoundland was never taken seriously as a province

All the merchants on Water Street combined didnt have the funds to fly Smallwood around ,an aircraft in Newfoundland at that time was a kin to the space shuttle landing at your nearest airport today..
Recent documents have concluded that Newfoundland's fate was decided by Britain and Canada with Smallwood as their toole,pawn,bitch,.. ..because they were fearful of America getting a toe hold on the North Atlantic..it was tampered and wrong what was to become of Newfoundland and Labrador..The bunch in Ottawa and Britain,at that time should have been shot. They should have just let the people speak..Newfoundland was by no means the basket case that Smallwood had made it out to be.
Smallwood wanted his name in history..and nothing more..He dosent deserve that..he was a conspirator and a criminal ,all for himself.

last thing I want is a ship named after him .....again ..

Im done ranting... :)

Last I checked on Marine Traffic the Traveller is in Bremerhaven, so if she's not in dry dock yet I'd say it won't be long now.

Now if only Marine Traffic would show the Blue Puttees crossing the Atlantic.  :) Hopefully she stops in St. John's.

I wasn't around during Joey Smallwood's time in office, so, I can't judge anyone.  This Gulfspan Generation 2 was just a dream I had, however, if they build two new ferries again, I think one of them should be named MV Caribou again for it's historical significance (Graceful animal on the coat of arms and in honor of the SS Caribou).  Thanks for sharing your rant, sometimes it feels good to vent out too!! ;D

That is not a concept, it is the JSS (Joint Support Ship) Hr.Ms. KAREL DOORMAN, currently being built by the Damen Schelde yard for the Dutch navy, with completion due in 2015. The Canadian navy was also supposed to order this design, but they pulled out...

This was the concept offered the Chilean military , Its directly based on what the Dutch are building..

It seems that the Blue Puttees is under going some type of exercise, un-docking docking.

Does anyone know for what purpose?

Proably just trying to get a feel for her..could be two to set up that thrid bow thruster..bearing clearances and all...

most likly feel ..Port aux Basques harbor is a place where a Captian gets one shot to park it or something gets broke..

Stena Traveller in dry dock, already cut and joined, 3 decks added as well. As by today still only temporary welding done. Lloyd Werft is looking to complete ths one by 3rd of Feburary (hahaha).

Blue Puttees still in LW, there was only one day sea trials, as far. She is about to sail to Canada soon, noone knows when, but it seems to be finished in most areas.

Lloyd Werft did well with the Blue Puttees. It seems that there is only the interior work to be finished. Her delay in departure for Canada night be due to the severe weather in the Atlantic.

If the shipyard does as well with the Traveller I believe that all parties will be pleased.

I guess delays was mainly because of Lloyd Werft who didn't let proceed subcontractors or failed to own schedule. Current one (for traveller) is I guess much, much less realistic to achive. 3rd of Feb (nice joke) All in all, some pictures below:

Now shes out ,She'll have a shake down and a punch list of just about everything.

However ,On lessons learned ..I hope they re-engage the safety systems to avoid another complete power loss akin to what the Puttee's suffered before leaving.
