Stadiongracht is still aground, but today there will be first attempts to refloat her by PKL managed tugs (chartered by Finnish Sea Service) MARS, MARSS-1 and JUPITER. Also it is possible to lighten her cargo beforehand. Meanwhile also Saimaagracht is proceeding Rauma to pick the paper reel load planned for Stadiongracht for the USEC. Some links in Finnish about the situation:

Shipping News and information / Stadiongracht grounded near Rauma
« on: December 29, 2010, 04:41:24 PM »
Hi,

The Dutch general cargo vessel Stadiongracht (IMO: 9202508) went aground last night a bit after midnight outside Rauma, Finland. Most likely the cause is a steering failure when trying to make a turn to take the pilot onboard. At the moment they are negotiating with tug and salvage operators about the refloating. So far no oil spill has been found, but one ballast tank is holed according to many Finnish media resources. The frontier guard patrol boat Tursas is on the scene as well.

The Stadiongracht was approaching Rauma on her way from Brazil via Kotka with a load of china clay for forest industry.

May add some links to the news later.

brgds,
Pekka

The North Spirit was a sistervessel to the Ice Prince, which sank also after the deckcargo of timber had shifted in the English Channel few years ago. Also many other vessels of this type had suffered serious list when their deckcargo shifted in heavy seas.

Also the sistership ONEGO MERCHANT (IMO: 9277321) will get her "own" name VRIESENDIEP back during the next days. She is bound for Oulu, Finland for Oct. 27th and should be there already as VRIESENDIEP.
Actually ONEGO MERCHANT was renamed to VRIESENDIEP at Hamina, Finland on October 29th. From there she continued to Oulu I mentioned above.

As far as I know this seems to be the first vehicle carrier hijacked by the Somalian pirates? Guess the only vulnerable areas on these kind high hull vessels are the place where the gangways are installed or the stern mooring deck.
