Title: MSC Orchestra dropped the port seemingly without a good reason ...
Post by: polsteam on June 23, 2014, 01:24:51 PM
Overcautious?...

There is no extreme weather (wind) today in Gdynia. Berth is not extremely hard to access. Yet the captain of MSC Orchestra took "last minute" decision to turn back on Gdynia just 2 or 3 miles away from port entrance, with tugs around and with pilot on its way or already onboard (this latter is unclear).

Don't you think the master of a ship should decide..what he does..where he goes etc?

If you agree...then why the second guessing?
Leave it to the experts. Or have go got a foreign going Master's Ticket?

Why this rude comment?

On the ship are 3000 passengers that paid for a visit to that town.

I agree with Polsteam: it is interesting to know why the vessel turned around?

Surely the 3,000 passengers were made aware of the reason for missing the port call. Maybe they will even be compensated for it. Cancelled calls happen from time to time on cruises for a variety of reasons other than bad weather. It would, however, be mildly interesting  (to some people) to know what the reason was and the rude comments were indeed quite uncalled for.

Masters of ships rarely make decisions as to ports of call - either for freighters or cruise liners. Bet it was last minute orders from the office . . could have been all sorts of reasons, which it would be interesting to know, particularly in this kind of case, where service suppliers like tug owners and pilotage would have a probable just cause for issuing an invoice, anyway!

Intriguing, as a ceremony commemorating the visit(s) of MSC Orchestra to Gdynia this year, was planned by the Port of Gdynia, for 1500 hrs on Monday 23 June.

In matters of safety the master WILL have the final say and he may also consult with the head office on whether to cancel a call due to scheduling problems, perhaps caused by a delayed departure from an earlier call or an unexpected medivac requiring an unscheduled stop or return to port.

Why this rude comment?
.
Nothing rude about it.
I am asking what qualifications this person has to question how a ship is being run?
It's all very well having an armchair opinion and to be second guessing.
But without any experience in these matters..What's the point?
I mean really.

He wasn't asking a question..He was making a case that the Captain was behaving in a timid fashion.

Now ..Why is what I say considered rude..But someone who it appears has no other qualification other than a website be able to make such claims?
If he just asked a straight forward question..I wouldn't care less.
But If he is using information gleaned off a website..Which may or may not be accurate to smear a cruise ship Captain.
Than I feel entitled to A ) Ask him what qualifications he has for doing so?
And B) why anyone feels the need to be a back seat driver in the first place?

By all means..Ask why a ship didn't call into a port at such a time.
But don't do a hatchet job. and frame it as a question.
It's uncalled for.

Ozzy, you should calm down, you're overshooting the mark here  ;)

Ozzy,
By your own logic; you have not submitted any photos so have barred yourself from comments on anybody else's submissions. (Granted, this particular issue does not relate to a photo).
Now go back and read Polsteam's original post.
Carefully.
He submitted an item of news. He offered no opinions, suggestions etc. He merely asked a question. Others may have submitted opinions, theories etc.
If you can't answer his question, it may be best if you left it alone.
