Title: St James Park hijacked by somali pirates
Post by: stevo on December 29, 2009, 10:38:41 AM
Just received email from Sky News, BBC News and Barcroft Media, they like to use my picture of the St James Park http://www.stevo.be/displayimage.php?pos=-726 because vessel is hijacketd by somali pirates.

I told them they could use my pic and that I like 100 euro for the credits. Let's see if I will see some money (just bought new computer  :-D  :-D  )

I wish you the best and I do really hope they will not turn somewhere else for cheaper or free photo, but you just did the right thing.

They are commercial organization and they should pay for usage of photos.

Even if we (the shipspotters posting pics on the Web for our pleasure and sharing with fellow ship enthusiasts) are amateurs - we still deserve royalties for photos published (at least to PARTLY cover our gasoline expences from wandering around ports and photo equipment costs).

They acted properly by asking you and you replied properly.

"My god what is the world coming to!!"

What do you think the news agency that wants to use this photo "is coming to" ?...  Do you think this news agency is offering its news services for free ?...

Good grief Lysfoss get a grip of yourself, with such ravings it is probably better if it is you who goes to see a Doctor.

If someone wants to 'borrow' an asset for commercial profit, i.e. in the case of photographs being used, then surely the person who owns the asset should be rewarded.

If you choose to put your self in a position where you would offer your work for free, then that is your decision and no one should question that fact.

However for you to launch such a vitriolic attack on a fellow member just because you don't agree with his legitimate actions is deplorable and should in my opinion be withdrawn as it is totally unacceptable.

Quite right, it's not an exhorbitant amount to ask, without pictures TV would be radio! A modest fee forms a contract and averts copyright problems later, no doubt the media would prefer the cheaper option!!

G'day Lysfoss,

Greedy? Oh Please, what's wrong with hoping to make a profit from some images? Really, whats the harm in wanting 100 Euros, In can only think that that sort of money could only go towards something like a new camera or something pretty awesome like that. Greed would be if they offered 100 Euros and he said "Is that all !!!!"

Whats the world coming to you ask. Well, making a profit and spending for that matter is all apart of the world we live in. The reality is; people can survive with out money, no matter how hard you try.

I wouldn't recommend him seeing a doctor, perhaps a bank teller would be better so he could cash in that 100 euro cheque?!

Kind Regards

Cody

Stevo!
After all the time and money that I believe you have spend on your photos, and then letting us other share them for free, you deserve credit and payment for your work of art when published in the media.
Hasse.

the above is 100% true and obvious...

and everone in each and every case of Copyright breach (publishing of photo without askin first anywhere) should "bother" the breacher of Copyright (not give up) not only for its own private interest but also in the interest of the whole community (to educate villains who "think" they may use photos without permission not to do it in future)...

Hi Peter

Interesting how this has arisen so quickly after the recent discussions on members here posting to the site without copyright ownership - 'case of what goes around comes around'. We seem to be quick to jump on others for using our shots but appear to turn a blind eye when it happens on the site.

Lets hope we see a clear steer on how they view copyright from the new owners.

"we seem to be quick to jump on others"...

I agree with you...  :-)   but the persons who are complaining about cases of media breaching shipspotters' Copyright (including me) are (I suppose) NOT the same persons who post or want to post someone's elses photos (without clarification of their Copyright status or as their own or "from their collection")...

Hi Peter

The photographs have clearly been downloaded from this site and that is why the SITE must be firm and fair when it comes to copyright.

I didn't want to start a discussion about asking money for a picture or not.

I only want to show how some company's are correct. There are a lot of topics on shipspotting.com, where you can find links to stolen pictures, even pictures from me are used on another website.

3 agencies contacted me, 1 said they have another 'free' photo for use, 1 asked me a price so only that agency could use the photo and BBC I had to inform they couldn't use the picture anymore because 1 agency bought all rights.

I don't want to make money out of it, but it's the correct way that these agencies are dealing with us, the photographer and owner of that photo.

Hoi Juergen,

I had to inform BBC they couldn't use my picture anymore.
I'm happy they contacted me to ASK if they could use a pic instead of STEAL a pic.

Hi Steve,

I usually ask and get around 60 euros for my photos and sell to more then one agency, I never sell "all rights"
Does "all rights" mean exclusively? I think not.
Cheers Fred
