New Tug for La Baie
« on: January 19, 2011, 10:58:10 PM »
Rio Tinto-Alcan have purchased the tug Stevns Icecap from Nordane Shipping of Denmark. The tug will arrive at La Baie on a heavy lift ship in February and will replace Alexis-Simard. Stevns Icecap is an identical sister to Fjord Saguenay, the other tug based at La Baie. It was built as Stevns Iceflower. Both tugs were on charter to Svitzer for a time. Stevns Iceflower as Svitzer Njord and Stevns Icecap as Svitzer Nanna.

This is sad news indeed, cause one of the the tugs captains from LA Baie, I spoke to, told me the Voith tugs were much easier to control than the ASD.

The Voith tugs were chosen for La Baie because of their superior control (at the time ASD tugs were very rare and not proven) Alcan looked at the navy tugs in Halifax and other V-S tugs and because Georgetown Shipyard (now East Isle) had built all their tugs and had built the navy tugs it was a good fit.
I hear Alexis-Simard has been bought by Groupe Ocean for use in Ontario, to replace Escorte, a smaller V-S.

Bonjour Monsieur Mac Mackay,
Good new for shipfan at La Baie. Glad to know that RIO TINTO ALCAN has decides to purchase a new tug for her installations here. Do you know the name of heavy lift ship? During the february the weather is very cold. It is possible to have the date of depart?
Thank you for this very interesting information. Michel La Baie

I dont know the name of the ship yet. The heavy lift ship will depart Denmark at the end of February.
There is also a ship called Horseshoe Casino in Quebec City that is to be loaded on a heavy lift ship, going to India. Maybe the same ship will be used? The loading/unloading may take place in the port of Quebec in that case.

Thx Mac for the info about the new tug. RTA has made a contest for their employees to find a new name for this tug.
