Does anyone reading this have any news on STENA TRAVELLER which is supposed to be refitted to be HIGHLANDER at bremenhaven. Checked marine traffick in that port, but no sign of ship yet.

Thanks Dean. Checking ais for bremenhaven yesterday & no sign of her. Guess they won,t be long as they seem to do great refit work.

I would say she has her AIS Transmitter off during the refit.I would say she will appear when all her equipment is up and running again.I think it is amazing what they have done to shorten the 2 ferries.I don't think we could imagine the full scope of what it took.

Quite simple actually..
Surveyors to Measure ,Chalk or laser line, plasma cutters, Hydraulic skid's,a very good crane to lift it out out old, Skid back together, plumb, fair, re-weld
Its not as huge as it sounds ..Ive worked with Boilermakers and Shipwrights 10feet out of a 100ft kiln or 12 meters out of a 212 meter ship ..the principles are the same..

Jarrod

Unless its a cable that relies on resistance it can be cut anywhere
Generally
its just tagged ,flagged ,pulled back from the nearest junction..then pulled ahead and reconnected after the join.. Hence the term "pulling wire" and "fishing"..If its allowed excess wire can be neatly coiled and secured in the event the ship gets lengthened.
Or they cut it all in the middle of the section thats getting removed,,and then spliced back via junctions ..

Job analysis will dedicate whats cut ,whats pulled ,whats moved,

pipes, duct, such will be strategically cut..Measurements taken can allow prefabrication of the short-end pipe's/duct while the ship is still being cut down..then rolled aboard test and final fits done, set the Hi/Low tack preheat, root, fill, cap, welder puts his ID number on and QC checks it out.

The whole idea to making this work is every system will be just ahead or in sync with the hull surgery..There will be systems that can be worked as the hull is being cut and re-welded..
so it falls like a domino foot by foot as the hull is being worked ..

To make it profitable a shipyard must to be timed perfectly, and firing on all cylinders..

British Columbia Ferries has done this to several of their vessels over the years......but the other way by adding a 25 meter section.....then a couple of years later, sliced horizontally and added another deck which doubled capacity.

Queen of Esquimalt: Original capacity 145 cars.....now 400.

I haven't heard much online about the Highlander but I found a live interactive web cam that you can see her in the distance seems to be painted up pretty good for the most part.  Here is a link to the camera site.

You can find the ship just above the marina during daylight hours.  It was raining there the last couple of days so I couldn't get a clear shot but you can see it.
