How do you calculate sea time?
« on: November 05, 2010, 07:38:30 AM »
Hi Everyone,

This is probably a rather stupid question but how do you calculate sea time? Is it based on 8 hour or 24 hour days?

Kind Regards,
Cody  :)

Thanks Edward!

So 8 hours equals one day? Is time on watch only counted as sea time or is being at sea in general count towards as sea time?

Cheers,
Cody

At sea usually stand watch for 4 hours and are off for 8 hours, 7 day a week.

The resthour regulations controls how long days we work at sea. Minimum 10 hours rest per 24 hours and minimum 77 hours per week (think it's been changed to 70 hours now). Within these limits we can work as much as we want. If you're watchgoing personnel you do 2x4hour watches every day and normally some overtime (maintenance duties, cargo operations, moooring etc.).
Regarding how to count seagoing experience, one day onboars equals one day of seagoing experience. At least that's how it works in Norway and Isle of Man.
