Yes there was no wind that day! The morning started horrible foggy and with total grey skys and I got a messagge from Marine Traffic that Emma was coming earlier. Was alreaddy horrified about the light conditions but when she arrived it was blue sky and even some nice clouds appearing just in the right moment.
Dave?
Where have you been? Why was you not coming along for a coffee? I thought that one of you might pop up there but I wasn

Hello Fred,
We are very interested in this Container Logistic Technik... Its sooo incredible how this all works.
When you have got another hint for me where to go I would be very pleased.
I think we will come up another time in around four weeks. This time was an exeption because I did a Netherlands roundtrip with  my mum. And I was very pleased as she liked the shipspotting and I could convince her to stay until Thursday to see Emma coming.

Hi Galadriel,
Were you at the entrance to the Nieuwe Waterweg? on Slag Maasmond?
Before you enter the strip alongside the water you are on the Europaweg, don't make that last left turn but go another 100mtrs and take a right turn. Go all the way to the Yangze haven and you can watch the Euromax (not on Google maps yet) container terminal en see this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJnHFNGSyPo  starting at 4:20 with the container handling.
Cheers Fred

When Emma was turning into the Beercanaal i was driving to the road i stopped next to the camper (bleu/green volkswagen).

Hi Fred,
Just looked on some photos which I took. I think we have been on the viewing spot after Slag Maasmond, closer to the Entry of the Nieuwe Waterweg.

And I think I have been at the Yangze Haven. ( Its all so big and without Navigation System I would have been completly lost..)  I looked onto the Euromax container terminal.  On my side there have been tankers, that was a bit uncomtable as I had to look over them with my binoculars.
There was a Hanjin and a Cosco Vessel at that time. I think, this is what you meant?

From the Markweg I could not see too much of Boxhandling as only the Maersk Terminal was in use when we have been there on Wednesday. The grey terminal in front of it was not busy at that time. But its buildings covering the Maersk Terminal!
Your film is great!

Hi Galadriel.
The spot I mean is about 50 meters away from the first large Gantrycrane on the Euromax terminal and can't be blocked by tankers or whatever. There's only a 3 meter high fence that you can look through and close to this fence are some large pipes that you can climb on, that gives you an even better view. I cannot guarantee the pipes will be still there next time and even access to this road could be blocked next time.
ciao fred

Hi guys,

Fred, I will definatly try to find that place with the pipes next time.
Dave, dont complain about that little tugboat... We have been sooo lucky. The whole morning before Emma arrived was a little digging boat ( I think it was a digger, it had a conveyer band at the end) digging direktly in the enter area of the harbour up and own, up and down. It would have been absolutely in the way for Photos. I was getting really anoyed about it and send some horrible curses at it, more horrible the later it got.( I know our mums taught us not to swear ;-)
And than luckily some minutes before Emma turned into the harbour that boat finally disapeared to the site....
So, it could have been much worse with our photos...!
I  put already some photos of Emma up here !
Ciao from Germany

Hi All. I am new to this excellent site. I am hopeful to see the Emma Maersk, which according to the published schedule arrives at APM Terminal on 30 December at 11:00am and departs 31 December at 11:00am. Is Hoek Van Holland a good place to see the boat come in and out of the harbor? If the boat is scheduled to depart on 31 Dec at 11:00am, how long until it becomes visible from Hoek Van Holland? Is there a better suggestion? Best regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

When you read through this thread you will virtually find all the information you need for shipspotting around the Europort which is located directly opposite to the Hook van Holland.
Even the ferry transfer over to the port site is described.
Best you mark all points in Google maps or even better in your navisystem. The Europort is huge you can't find your way arounds when you don't have the spots marked before....
My favourite spot is the end of the Markweg, which is desribed in one of the answers above as well...there you can see Emma coming in and can follow her when she is going to the Maersk terminal.

We are already in Oberstdorf, have lovely snow here and  so I think we will not get there this time for the 30th.

Kind regards

galadriel

Dear Galadriel:

Thank you so much for your reply and for the great advice. In your experience, do the big ships like Emma typically arrive and depart on schedule, or is it smart to allow for a few hours on either side of the schedule?

Also, in addition to Markweg, is Hoek van Holland a good point to watch Emma depart the harbour, or is it too far away?

Best regards,
Peter
