Cargo vessel KARIM JUNIOR sank off Tenes - 8 presumed dead

The Togo-flagged cargo m/v "Karim Junior", 2139 gt(IMO-Nr. 7624439) sank on Dec 15. Two sailors drowned and six others were missing in the wreck at the entrance of a port a port on the coast of western Algeria. One member of the crew of the cargo vessel had survived after he had managed to swim ashore. The man, an Egyptian, was being treated in hospital at the port of Tenes. The "Karim Junior" had been anchored off Tenes for the past week.
The ship had dragged its anchor in high winds before it had struck a breakwater at the entrance to the port and sunk around 5am. With the violence of the impact, the vessel's cabin became detached before sinking, bringing with it eight sailors, two of whom were recovered dead while six are missing. Divers have been sent out to search the wreckage at the port, which is about 200km west of the capital, Algiers.
