Clelia II stranded in Antarctica
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:32:44 PM »
A Maltese vessel faces an emergency situation in Antarctica with 160 passengers on borrad after one of its Motors stopped functioning while it was navigating through the Drake Passage to Ushuaia.

According to the SAR Centre for Search and Rescue, the Clelia II vessel is having propeller problems and faces limited maneuverability.

The vessel is to the northeast of the Shetland Islands, some 845 kilometers south of Ushuaia.

The wind blows at about 90km/h and the weather conditions are harsh.

No incidents have been reported with regards to the crew or the passengers as of yet.

uhhh... Have been in these waters with high winds. Not a nice place to be without engine. I hope everything will go allright...

Just saw a video shot from the deck of the National Geographic Explorer (former Hurtigrute-Ship) of the cruise-ship. Just one engine is working and they limping slowly back to Ushuhia.

After watching the video I can imagine what the passengers are going trough, many of them are sick at this moment and scared to death.
