Silver Sea sank off Taiwan
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:37:32 AM »
Some 11 crewmembers are missing after their container vessel was hit
by a typhoon off Taiwan on Monday.

The Panama-registered 100TEU Silver Sea was hit by Typhoon Parma  -
which has reportedly killed up to 15 people in the Philippines - about
80 miles southeast of Taiwan as it sailed from the island's Kaohsiung
Port to the Philippines.

The 1983-built ship put out a distress call on Sunday evening:
according to reports two crew members and the master were rescued by
Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau and another was saved by China's maritime
department. Eleven seafarers remain unaccounted for.

An official at Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau said that rescue work was
still ongoing and that Taiwan rescue centre had sent helicopters to
help in the search. He added that local fishing vessels had been asked
to help, but that ongoing bad weather was hampering the search.
