ALGOMA DISCOVERY stuck on Harriersand
« on: September 25, 2009, 05:09:03 PM »
On Sep 24 at 7.30 pm. the Bahamas-flagged cargo m/v "Algoma Discovery", 34752 dwt (IMO-No.: 8505848), ran aground on the Harrier Sand on the Weser near Brake while coming from Bremen and being bound for Ravenna. The tugs "Rotesand" and "Bremerhaven" proceeded to the grounding site, but time was running out as did the tide. With the flood at 7 a.m. on Sep 25 not less than eight tugs had connected to the ship, among them the "Bugsier 1", "Bugsier 20", "Bugsier 6", "Stier", Rotesand" and "Bremerhaven". The refloating attempt was suspended at 7.20 a.m. without success. The "Algoma Discovery" has on board a cargo of 27000 tons steel coils. The ship will now be lightered.

Having a fleet that is almost entirely restricted to the Great Lakes and St Lawrence the Algoma people must have forgotten about tides! :-D
My blog with narrative and more photos is located at:

read the introduction and also there are about 5 different blogs of ships and railroads

... surely they did not forget about tide, Magogman.

This vessel as well as her sister ALGOMA GUARDIAN have been in Bremen several times, and for this type of vessel ( > 200 m length) it is compulsary that two pilots must be on board while sailing the River Weser between Bremen - Bremerhaven and vice versa. Thus both pilots as well as ship's command have been well aware about the tide.

Algoma Discovery suffered a technical problem which resulted in the grounding.
dead slow ahead !  :-)
best regards, Klaus

The Algoma Discovery was just freed from the bank a minute ago, I happened to see it on AISLive. Eleven tugs were at the scene and they were:

BUGSIER 1
BUGSIER 3
BUGSIER 6
BUGSIER 9
ELBE
EMS
GROHN
JADE
LESUM
ROTESAND
WESER

Brdgs,
Aleksi

... after nearly 48 hours she was pulled off by five tugs with a total of 450 to bollard pull.

Approx. 6.000 metric tons of heavy steelcoils were discharged by means of two floating cranes onto three barges, furthermore heavy fuel oil was was pumped onto an oil pollution vessel and a dredger cleared her bow.

Meanwhile Algoma Discovery returned to Bremen. She is moored at a waiting berth, seemingly waiting for departure of mv "Atalanta" presently loading steelcoils. Guess "A.D." will then load again those 6.000 mtons steelcoils discharged while grounded.
dead slow ahead !  :-)
best regards, Klaus
