German ship hijacked by pirates

The ship was attacked within a convoy lead by a turkish frigate, the helicopters of the frigate arrived too late on scene.

I really can't understand,why this happened!Are the warships in vacation there?They were in the so called "Security Zone" of the Gulf of Aden.
