Carnival Suing Rolls Royce/Alstom
« on: December 05, 2008, 08:22:05 AM »
Carnival cruise lines have announced they are suing Rolls Royce & Alstom Power Conversion for millions of dollars. (In excess of $100M)
They allege that the QM2 propulsion system has never worked and that RR & Alstom knew it would never work and are therefore guilty of fraud.

Hi,

it seems that Carnival isn't the first operator to sue Rolls Royce over the Mermaid propulsion systems, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises have already sewed RR over faults in the pods.

I've only heard of one occasion where the pods of QM2 hit the headlines when a South American cruise had to be aborted or rescheduled because of a pod failure which resulted in the ship not being able to dock, I believe it was back in 2005, a few months after she had entered service. Does anyone know more?

Hi Cedric

Carnival have filed a 45 page lawsuit.  They claim that QM2 has repeatedly had to go in for repairs to the pod system, and that they have lost revenue and huge repair bills. They say RR knew all about the problems.

Rolls Royce deny and will contest.

Hi,

she has four pods so I suspect they don't all break at the same time or break down completely.
