Hi All

Although we consider that we lack the traffic on the Tyne (North East England), the Port of Tyne has been voted the European Port of the Year for 2007.

It made a name for itself exporting Geordie coal around the world. And now the Port of Tyne is on top of the world once again, but this time for bringing coals to Newcastle. Industrial Reporter Nick Whitten takes a closer look at its success

The Port of Tyne has been crowned European Port of the Year 2007 thanks to the success of its bulk cargo business, especially Russian coal imports.

The port now has nearly 40 million tonnes of cargo passing through it a year including around 60,000 tonnes of imported coal.

And the bulk cargo business has left the port with little option but to grow.
