Kristina Regina collided with a barge and suffered only minor damaged.

Kristina Regina crew spotted the barge on the radar but were not able to avoid the collision. Cause??.

If they had followed rule 19 they would not have collided with the barge.

I don't know enough about this incident to have an opinion, but there seems to be a lot of discussion over the application of Rule 19.

It would be good to hear the opinions of ships' officers on this subject.
Best,

Charles

In my LIMITED experience as a Deck Cadet i'd just like to point you to part B of Rule 19... enough said really?  I wouldn't of thought she was doing a "safe speed" if they had detected the barge on the radar and were still unable to avoid it.

Read up on Rule 6 (Safe Speed), especially part B.

Of course I don't know what speed she was doing and only have read the information in the post so far but I understand the commercial pressures Masters are under.  But still, as OOW I'm sure I would of said something.
