Collision in the Strait of Messina
« on: January 15, 2007, 07:38:38 PM »
A collision has happened in the strait of Messina, today: monday, Jan 15th 2007, at 18.20 (GMT +1); between a russian container ship, with Antigua flag, and a hydrofoil of the Italian Railways, in ferry service between Reggio Calabria and Messina.
There have been many injured among the passengers but, as for now, no casualties.
I must go down to the sea again

What a tragic event. All the news channels are carrying the story and some with pictures.

The navigational controls in the Messina Strait have proved very effective for nearly 20 years since the last major collision on 25 March 1985 between the tankers PATMOS and CASTILLO de MONTEARAGON when there was also fatalities.

Messina is only a few kilometers from my domicile, I will go there tomorrow and have a look. Both ships involved are berthed there.
Will take some pictures and upload them accordingly.

Terrible collision, the only thing that  I don't understand is why all newspaper reports that segesta jet is an hydrofoil. I saw some pictures and it seem a normal hydrojet ferry and not an hydrofoil? Ddo you confirm it?

Hi,
you are right.
the SEGESTA JET is absolutely no hydrofoil, but a hydrojet.

but even our local newspaper, LA SICILIA, writes only nonsense. They call it "ALISCAFO" (literally translated "winged hull boat"), which is rubbish. I do not know from where these journalists are handpicked :-(

as you are Italian, you may read here:

http://www.lasicilia.it/articoli.nsf/(RicercaSI)?SearchView&Query=Susan+Borchard&SearchOrder=3&Start=1&Count=15

they probably believe all what is fast is supposed to have wings  :-D

further LA SICILIA has not even succeeded to pick the correct ship from the register. They write of a 10 ten years old container carrier. Obviously they mixed her up with the PATRICIA S, which was indeed once named SUSAN BORCHARD, too  8-)

IMO number : 9113197
Name of ship : PATRICIA S
Call Sign : V2OP7
Gross tonnage : 4015
Type of ship : General Cargo Ship
Year of build : 1995
Flag : Antigua and Barbuda

the actual SUSAN BORCHARD is this one:
