Runaway ship! (chrystal sea)
« on: January 31, 2007, 01:08:30 PM »
News in norwegian news today:
The well-servicer "crystal sea" ran away from a contract in india. The ship, with 19 souls onboard. Two dornierplanes took off after her, but she allready was in international waters. This has now spawned diplomatic difficulties between norway and india. Seadrill landed a contract worth hundred million kroner, but problems ended the contract, according to the norwegians.

One version:
http://tinyurl.com/2r6nj3

and the other:
OSLO (AFX) - Seadrill Ltd said the floating production, storage and offloading vessel, Crystal Sea, is leaving India after its current contract with Discovery Enterprise was terminated.
While Seadrill said the vessel was being are located for new business opportunities', no details were given about these opportunities, nor the likely financial implications of the contract termination.
Crystal Sea commenced operations in India under a five-year contract with Discovery Enterprise in June 2006.
However, Seadrill said that riser-related problems halted operations and that it was concluded that activity would not be resumed within the time schedule previously outlined.
Best,

Charles

This is just speculation, pure guesswork, but my thoughts are that Seadrill decided that negotiating a contract cancellation would be better done without their costly asset being under arrest.  Their definition of a level playing field.

Of course, ONGC and the Indian government see it the opposite way, that arrest of the vessel is their only leverage in a negotiation.

Although "arrest" and "courts" are mentioned, I think (no lawyer am I) this is a civil court matter, so some entity will pay some other entity, and some lawyers will make money, and the world will go on....
Best,

Charles

Yeah, one big issue here in norway is that one of the owners of seadrill is Mr John Fredriksen, that owns the massive frontline. Too bad that he is more in the news for his richness, than his buisness. Strange that they ran away dough. Too much money involved.
