An interesting snippet of news this week concerns the former Peruvuan Navy replenishment tanker MOLLENDO (12,490 grt, built 1962 Hitachi Zosen). Apparently, she was lost during the first Gulf War but was later salved. She had been lying damaged somewhere in Iraq since 1993, reportedly owned by UAE interests. They were keen to sell her for scrap but various political and logistical issues had prevented it. However, these have now been resolved and at the end of August she turned up at Gadani Beach under tow to be finally demolished.

This ship holds a particular memory for me as I saw her on one of my very first (camera-less) shipspotting trips in 1974-75, berthed at the old Tilbury Repair Jetty on the Thames.  I wonder if anyone has a shot of her?

Hi Phil,

Can't remember the MOLLENDO but I have a photo of the Peruvuan PARINAS taken at Purfleet, I havent dated the photo so it would possibly be from about the same time. Was there some sort of exercise going on I wonder.

Hi Bob,

That's very interesting. You may well be right as they are not the sort of ships you would normally expect to see on the river.

Cheers

Sorry it's going up hill, the tide must have been going out at the time  :-D
Either that or the G&T's were starting to take effect....  :-)
