Hi all,

Since December 2013, all 7 Nedlloyd hatchcoverless container ships have been sold for scrap. They were quite revolutionary when built, but now they are getting old and are in the very unpopular (at the moment) sub-5,000 TEU segment ("Panamax"). The 7 ships fall into two subclasses: 5 smaller ships (with the names of the five continents), built in 1991/'92 and two larger ships (NEDLLOYD HONG KONG and HONSHU) built in '94/'95.

Here's a rundown of the ships and their fates (sources: GMS Weekly, Equasis.org and Miramarshipindex.org.nz):

NEDLLOYD ASIA (IMO 8915665), built IHI, Kure, yardno, 3007, delivered 1991. Renamed CASHEL for her final voyage. Arrived Chittagong 28/1/'14, beached 4/2/'14

NEDLLOYD AMERICA (IMO 8915677), built IHI, Kure, yardno, 3008, delivered 1992. Renamed EKALI for her final voyage. Arrived Alang 23/1/'14, beached 31/1/'14

NEDLLOYD OCEANIA (IMO 8915689), built IHI, Kure, yardno. 3009, delivered 1992. Renamed GATO for her final voyage. Arrived Alang 16/1/'14, beached 19/1/'14

NEDLLOYD EUROPA (IMO 8915691), built Mitsubishi, Kobe, yardno. 1184, delivered 1991. Renamed DABAT for her final voyage. Still enroute to the breakers.

NEDLLOYD AFRICA (IMO 8915706), built Mitsubishi, Kobe, yardno. 1185, delivered 1992. Renamed BALTARIO for her final voyage. Still enroute to the breakers.

MAERSK MIAMI, ex-NEDLLOYD HONG KONG (IMO 9001253), built IHI, Kure, yardno. 3014, delivered 1994. Renamed HEMOL for her final voyage. Arrived Alang 23/1/'14, beached 30/1/'14

NEDLLOYD HONSHU (IMO 9001318), built Mitsubishi, Kobe, yardno. 1187, delivered 1995. Renamed KADIK for her final voyage. Arrived Alang 15/1/'14, beached 18/1/'14.

So, catch those last two ships on camera while you still can, they will be history very soon!

Nice vessels, in addition to these a number of ex P&ONedlloyd Jervis Bay class have also gone, would love to see one last photo of all these on the beach at Alang.

Are the Hanjin and Nedlloyd scrappings not only due to age but also a result of larger vessels being cascaded down ?

Why did they not fill up with water and sink? They don't seem to have much of a deflector at the bow.

OF COURSE A LOT IS CASCADING DOWN
JUST WAIT WHEN THE TRIPLE-E IS READY AND ALL THE OTHERS OF THE SAME CLASS /SIZE FOR OTHER COMPANIES NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION !!!!!
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

@holedriller: they had lots of pumps taking care of water seeping in

@Captain Ted: absolutely! Already, there is carnage going on in the Panamax segment as these ships have indeed been pushed out by larger ships being cascaded down (8,000 - 10,000 TEU). Let's see what else happens!

Hi all,

Does anyone know when and where the BALTARIO (ex-NEDLLOYD AFRICA) was beached? All I can find is a mention in Miramar Ship Index that she was "BU 19.03.14". That does not tell me if that was her arrival or beaching date or what the location was. Thanks in advance!
