Very sad to see this. I used to work on the Evert Prahm's sister ship, Selene Prahm over 15 years ago so my heart sank when I first saw the photo and wondered if it was the Selene.

In this situation who has the right of way on the canal? Surely the ferry (if you can call it that?) should have to wait for shipping to pass that is already in motion and in close proximity?

This ferry must keep a safety distance to passing ships of 1000 meter, all the self propelled ferries must keep a safety distance of 250 meter.
Ferries always have to wait until ships have passed.

From the video, the ferry started to move right in front of the vessel...   ???

Is there a 'driver' on the ferry/pod, or is it controlled from an office on the shore?

Only 1 ferryman onboard, he can steer all manouvers from his paneel in his cabin.

Just 30 minutes ago the Kiel Canal was closed again, westbound MV  "Sonderborg Strait" ran aground with full speed ( 6,8 kn) near Rendsburg at kilometer 60,250
Ship is waiting for 2 tugs which will start now in Brunsbuttel, they will arrive in about 5 hours.
