TURKISH DESTROYER
« on: November 03, 2014, 11:45:06 PM »
I am trying to find out the name of this Turkish destroyer, an American ex-GLEAVES class.  Four were transferred in 1949 and I know one had G-1 (GELIBOLU - ex USS BUCHANAN).  I presume they were number G-1 to G-4, renumbered again in the early 1950s as two had D21 and D22 and finally renumbered again to D344 to D347.  (Ex-USS LANSDOWNE - TCG GAZIANTEP), McCALLA - TCG GIRESUN, and LARDNER - TCG GEMLIK being the other three)

Can anyone shed light on this for me.

Regard,

Alan

Hi Alan:

TCG Gaziantep (D344) ex USS Lansdowne (DD-486)
TCG Giresun (D345) ex USS McCalla (DD-488)
TCG Gelibolu (D346) ex USS Buchanan (DD-484)
TCG Gemlik (D347) ex USS Lardner (DD-487).

Details on wikipedia.org

Hope this may help. Regards Peter

Hello Peter,

I am aware of these pennant numbers but these destroyers had previous pennant numbers of which I have one with G.3 on the side.  This is what I am trying to find out.  It seems that the Turkish ships have previous numbers prior to receiving the D344 to 347.

Many thanks for your response which is much appreciated.

Regards,

Alan

Hello Ken,

I have tried that avenue as well and no luck cannot find anything on the internet appertaining to this pennant number,  Found G1 GAZIANTEP in an old Janes.  The search goes on but many thanks for your input.

Regards,

Alan

The number system is sometimes confusing and hard to track down. Try Conways all worlds fighting ships.

But reference to G3 would indicate a ship in a different naval service, i.e., Italy. D21 if memory serves me correct would be of Brazilian Navy Pennant number.

Any ways just some thought's on the subject.

Regards
