Having recently retired I am begining to rekindle my love of  both radio and ships.with modern technology it is is easy to get lots of info etc. However two things i would like to ask anyone with knowledge. Bearing in mind that I live in Norwich England ( about 20-30miles from coast- flat terrain) can anyone help with following

1. Would I be able to listen in on martime radio transmissions without special licences and what type of receiver and areial combination would I need.

2. Ditto with AIS. Can I set up my own AIS system to receive information directly and how expensive and easy is it?

As you can see I am a novice!
