Cap Locks stuck ON in ship name upload
Allan RO:
Not strictly true
Stolt tankers use lower case in their hull names

Tuomas Romu:
As we all know, writing in all caps equals to screaming or yelling. Now, imagine a ship in a storm, with wind howling in the masts and waves crashing on the deck. In such situation, would you gently whisper the name of your ship to your fellow crewman's ear?
Last time I saw a ship, the port of registry was also painted in all caps. I checked DNV Exchange and even there it was in all caps. Still, that vessel was registered in Helsinki and not in HELSINKI...
Many documents use all caps for ship names because not too long ago that was the only way to emphasize text. However, for example Wikipedia uses italics instead, a style which I have adopted for professional work as well. For ShipSpotting.com, I'm willing to accept all caps because the name next to the photograph is more akin to a database entry than a word in a text, but God forbid any of you from using it in forum posts...
Aleksi Lindström:
Despite God and Tuomas forbid, I promise I will use all caps on all forums when writing ships' names. ::)
Cheers,
Aleksi

Dear me! What a fuss over a name!
A couple of points though:
Stolt use whatever takes their fancy! All capitals on the hull and superstructure, with correctly spelled ship names (correctly as in a capital letter as the first).
Tuomas says ships have the port of registry painted in capitals. Not on Stolt vessels they don't! Again, they use correctly spelled port names. Eg: George Town.
Finally, in the interests of keeping Pier Master on the straight and narrow; the word you were looking for is "capital". "Capitol" is a different kettle of fish altogether.
It really doesn't matter though.
When someone addresses me verbally, I can't hear if they are using a capital letter at the start of my name. If they address me in writing, it is only a matter of etiquette to use a capital first letter.

I dont think this anything to do with a particular company and how they spell the ships name, caps or not.
This is simply the proper way to use the Queens English, i.e. the way you were taught at school.
Or is it that what you were taught goes out the window when you join Shipspotting, were you have to use the SHIPSPOTTING ENGLISH. in deference to all the previous teachings
