Cap Locks stuck ON in ship name upload
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:04:08 PM »
Just a heads up!....

Capitol letter lock seems to be stuck in the ON position for entering ship's name in the upload menu.

Not caused by user and not correctable by user either.

Other upload entry boxes are working properly.

UPDATE - 4-23-14

Appears that previous cap lock - on mode is now resolved allowing upper and lower letters to be input by user.
;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't like it, but for the sake of consistency on this website I guess it's okay.

I've highlighted this problem some time ago, and got nowhere. And as for consistancy on the site "rubbish" as it's only some ship names that come up in caps.
For the sake of consisancy then the site has to follow the english language teaching, that the first letter is capitol and the rest small letters.
If this was adhered to then consistancy would break out.

There are two sides to this; yes we capitalise names, but, when you see the name of the ship painted on the hull it is all capitalised. There is no correct option.
Blistering barnacles...

Not strictly true

Stolt tankers use lower case in their hull names

As we all know, writing in all caps equals to screaming or yelling. Now, imagine a ship in a storm, with wind howling in the masts and waves crashing on the deck. In such situation, would you gently whisper the name of your ship to your fellow crewman's ear?

Last time I saw a ship, the port of registry was also painted in all caps. I checked DNV Exchange and even there it was in all caps. Still, that vessel was registered in Helsinki and not in HELSINKI...

Many documents use all caps for ship names because not too long ago that was the only way to emphasize text. However, for example Wikipedia uses italics instead, a style which I have adopted for professional work as well. For ShipSpotting.com, I'm willing to accept all caps because the name next to the photograph is more akin to a database entry than a word in a text, but God forbid any of you from using it in forum posts...

Despite God and Tuomas forbid, I promise I will use all caps on all forums when writing ships' names.  ::)

Cheers,
Aleksi

Dear me! What a fuss over a name!
A couple of points though:
Stolt use whatever takes their fancy! All capitals on the hull and superstructure, with correctly spelled ship names (correctly as in a capital letter as the first).
Tuomas says ships have the port of registry painted in capitals. Not on Stolt vessels they don't! Again, they use correctly spelled port names. Eg: George Town.
Finally, in the interests of keeping Pier Master on the straight and narrow; the word you were looking for is "capital". "Capitol" is a different kettle of fish altogether.
It really doesn't matter though.
When someone addresses me verbally, I can't hear if they are using a capital letter at the start of my name. If they address me in writing, it is only a matter of etiquette to use a capital first letter.

I dont think this anything to do with a particular company and how they spell the ships name, caps or not.
This is simply the proper way to use the Queens English, i.e. the way you were taught at school.
Or is it that what you were taught goes out the window when you join Shipspotting, were you have to use the SHIPSPOTTING ENGLISH. in deference to all the previous teachings

Nevertheless Kelvin, it's bloody annoying to type things one way only to have them appear in a different and usually unwanted way

What a fuss about absolutely nothing. It's the title of the page, for goodness sake.  It's got nothing to do with "correct" English, what's painted on the ship, shouting, personal preference, or anything else except website consistency. Just look at the hotch-potch you get when putting a name into a search.  Just look at the long struggle Ken has had (probably still having) to get members to enter pennant numbers correctly. It's good to see a site standard set and implemented in a user-friendly way (ie, we don't have to worry about it).

Ken, to complete the job, why not ask the techies to write a nice bit of script that will turn all the existing ship name titles into capitals-only?

And no, an auto-script for capitalised lower case names doesn't work, ending up with abominations like Atlantic Iii (just look at the GrossTonnage entries).

At first I thought that using "regular" way of writing with first letters in capital only made sense, for there were many names using abbreviations, like MSC, UASC etc. and that was also sometimes the source of confusion, in case of names like "Ibn Hazm", where "Ibn" is an actual word, and not I-B-N, like the captain of the very same vessel kept telling me...
...
And then I crossed to the "dark side". :)

I agree that names should be in all caps for the purpose of uniformity, as well as for the title of page. I didn't even notice the feature in the upload page - I was already entering the names in all caps for some time...

Well now Allan; here's one to confuse the issue:

Oh dear! The first 3 letters are capitals, while the last letter is in lower case!

Looks like a nice big Turkish NOSİ to me, rather than NOSi.
